 Cinema or motion picture is a young
medium, compared to most other art
forms such as painting, literature, dance
and theatre which have existed for
thousands of years, but film came into
existence only a little more than a
century ago.
 It depends on complex technology since
it requires machines and collaborative
effort from participants who produce it.

 Back during the time when the movies
were not considered “art”; at the most,
they were only considered as a stepchild
of the theatre

 For most people, a movie is just a movie


while for some, it is a form of escape,
entertainment and leisure.

 Film does resemble other forms of art
like painting and literature BUT critics
argue that “film cannot be art, for it
does nothing but reproduce reality
mechanically”

 Unlike painting, the creation of reality


lies from the artist’s eye, his hand
and finally the brush that puts the
strokes on the canvas.

 But through devices : manner of
camera angles, framing the scene
and the gestures of the actor, the
sharp, and often rapid contrast
between dark and light and the use
of ample shadowing, films places the
viewers in the same situation as that
of the protagonist, thus allowing for
maximum identification with his
dilemma.

 With that, films self-consciously blend
text, image and sound in a way that
competes simultaneously with literature,
painting and music because it
narrates plots.
 Since it narrates plot and describe
human actions, they are also in
competition with opera and theatre.

 With all of these arguments, this only
proves that film as an art aspects that
best show the characteristics of a
particular subject are not just mere
mechanical recording but a deliberate
attempt to achieve specific effects
or aesthetics.

1. Review the lessons on the previous
chapters and make yourself well-
acquainted with the basic concepts of
photography, music and the elements
and principles of design
2. Expose yourself to different kinds of
movies.
3. Watch the film more than once
