What is
Referral?
It is the process of directing a
peer or service user to
another healthcare provider
or specialist who can offer
more specialized or
appropriate care for their
specific needs.
Why is there a
need for Referral?

problems by your peers are
beyond the bounds of the
peer facilitation skills, the
peer facilitator should do the
ethical way of referring to the
appropriate person or office.
• Peer facilitators respect the
dignity and promote the
welfare and safety of their
peers.

● Self-referral by students/peers who are

When to Refer?
1. Lack of energy, visible signs of constant
fatigue, or frequently falling asleep in
class or in workplace.
2. Regularly missing classes or work
3. Infrequent class or work attendance
with minimal or no work completed
4. Repeated requests for special
consideration (e.g. extensions on
deadline)

6. Appearing overly nervous, tensed,

academic performances

Steps to making a Referral
1. Once warning signs are recognized, talk to
your peer and see how he/she is doing.
2. Document your session with your peer
using a referral form.

3. Approach your designated guidance
counselor or any designated peer support
group oversight committee member, and
hand over your referral form
4. Monitor progress and check-in with your
peer, as needed.
