Components are extras that are added to the fabric used to
make a textile item.
Most of them are often pre manufactured but can be home
made such as shoulder pads or covered buttons.

Fasteners and Closures
• Buttons: small disks sewn onto one piece of fabric that hook into
small holes on an opposite piece of fabric. Learn how to sew buttons

ZIPPERS
Zippers: fasteniing tools with two rows of
interlocking metal parts
Theses are one of the most secure fastenings
and reasonably quick and easy to apply
products
There different types of zips in different weights
some are nylon and some are metal
The weight is chosen to to suit the fabric weight
as well as matching the colour
Metal zips are used when strength is required
(such as jeans).
Zips are fixed on tapes often made from woven
cotton, polyester and polycotton
HOOKS AND EYES
• Hooks and eyes
• Usually made from metal and
used when a flat fastening is
needed.
• Can be hand or machine sewn in
place
• Used on bras and corsetry
Press studs
• press studs
• These are simple, flat closures
used for many textile products
• Can be metal or plastic
• Need to be matched correctly
and the size selected must be
appropriate to the force that may
be put on the fastening
Velcro
• Velcro is a hook and a loop style
fastening used for quick simple
applications, especially for childrens
products as it is safe and easy to use
• Not suitable for fine fabrics as it is
bulky and the hooks can snag finer
fabrics
• It washes well and is hard wearing
but the hooks can pickup other
fibres over time, making them less
effective if not cleaned
Drawstring
• Drawstrings fastening comprises a
cord and an open channel to
thread the coed through to
tighten and close the product
• Drawstrings are popular on coats,
jackets, waistbands and handbags
Eyelets and lacing
• Metal or stitched eyelets are
placed on the product and laces
are threaded through to form a
closure
• This can be decorative and can
also allow for adjustment in the fit
of the product
• This styles can be found in
corsetry, dresses and on footwear
Textile components
Sewing thread
• To hold fabric pieces together, to add fastenings, to add decoration.
Beads and sequins
• To decorate with colour and texture and catch the light
• To add weight to a product
Ribbons, bindings, braids
• To add decorative edging, or decorative features.
• To used as ties and fastenings
Pre-manufactured motifs
• To speed up decorative processes and add a feature
Shoulder pads
• To add shape and definition to the shoulder of the garment
Boning
• To add ridgidity and structure
