St. Paul, in his letter to the
Ephesians, wrote, “And he gave
some as apostles, others as
prophets, others as evangelist,
others as pastors and teachers,
to equip the holy ones of the
work of ministry, for building up
the body of Christ”(Ephesians
4:11-12)
The members of the Church
work together, each according
to their ministry, to build the
whole Church as Body of
Christ.

St. Paul warns the people that “the

(2 Thessalonians 2:7)

Evil obstructs the coming of Christ’s

kingdom. “The dark forces…. Are
active in the world, almost to the
point of ruling it” (RP 14). Thus,
people have to face the reality of
sin.
Sin is “an utterance, a deed, or
a desire contrary to the eternal
law” (cf. CCC 1849)
Eternal Law refers to the mind of God and His plan
It is against the plan and will of God. It
can be understood, in a broader sense,
as:
• Refusing to follow our own
conscience’s call toward the good;
• Rejecting God, our Creator and Lord,
and our own true selves and others

St. John Paul II describes sin as
a product of man’s freedom.
Given the capacity to choose,
people have the power to
choose not only the good but
also evil.
Thus, they have to take sin
seriously and reflect deeply to:
1. Truly appreciate God’s
everlasting merciful love and

Sense of Sin
Objectives:
• To develop a sense of sin
• To emphasize the need to
recognize the tendency to sin

on the outside, but inside are
full of deads men’s bone and

Let’s Identify what act/s are
considered sinful and explain.
• Answering back to parents
• Watching movies during weekends
• Failing to attend Sunday Mass
• Cheating during Exams
• Giving foods to beggars
• Buying pirated DVD
The one who sins needs God’s
forgiveness. Whoever claims of
being free from guilt of sin is a
liar.

He/she is fooling
himself/herself.
The Church teaches that “moral life
then requires that we recognize in
ourselves the tendency to sin and
acknowledge ourselves as sinners
when we have done evil” (CFC 764)

Jesus, whose misión was to liberate

humanity from sinfulness, calls us to
overcome the reality of Personal
Sin and Structural Sin
Today’s sense of sin, however, is
constinously threatened and
weakened by secularism. “the sin
of the century is the loss of the
sense of sin” (RP 18)

Furthermore, “A true sense of
sin is a grace as we perceive in
the saints, who (paradoxically)
manifested, without exception,
a far keener sense of sin than
the ordinary sinner”.
(CFC 765)
Jesus hated the scribes and
Pharises for their hypocrisy and for
being keen on others’ sin but
callous to theirs. “Woe to you,
scribes and Pharisees, you
hypocrites. You are like
whitewashed tombs, which appear
beautiful on the outside, but inside
are full of dead men’s bones and

B. Answer and share with your
partner the following questions.
1. Is guilt-feeling a basis to
determine
the act evil?

Dimensions of Sin
and Social Sin
Objectives:
• To describe each dimensión of
sin
• To provide an example for each
dimensión of sin
• To discuss the meaning and
implications of social sin

Identify the ítem that are true about
the virus.
1. It requires living host
2. Invades and takes over the cells
3. Is comunicable
4. Caauses illness
5. Replicates inside the living cells
Sin has three different dimensions:
spiral, sickness, and addiction.
1. Sin, as spiral, is like a virus that
infects and pollutes our thinking and
feeling, making us slaves of bad habits
and negative attitude.
2. Sin, as sickness, weakens our will
to overcome it and temptation. It can
further complicate our sinful ways and
lead us to more sins.
3. Sin, as an addiction, can make us
powerless as it progressively becomes
compulsive and obsessive. An example
of this is that of consumerism, whereby
the person finds pleasure in buying and
not in fulfilling his/her needs. It may
come to the point of wanting to stop
but failing short to control the desire to
buy.
Sin, as spiral, can lead others to sin
through bad example.
As a sickness, it does affect how a
person regards and relates to God, and
things.
As addiction, the person continues his/
her commission due to false
experience and empty promise of
happiness.
Sin can be committed not only by an
individual but also by a group of
persons. This sin is called social sin. It
points out how. persons can mutually be
involved in sin. This shows how sin can
negatively influence other people, attack
human rights and basic human freedom,
disregard the common good, damage
relationships, and grow into a sinful structure,
such as racial discrimination and economic
systems of exploitation.

Due to original sin, people have
tendencies to sin. These tendencies
manifest in certain roots of sin. These
roots of sin are traditionally called the
seven capital sins. They are also known
as seven deadly sins. The seven deadly
sins were first compiled by Pope
Gregory I around the year 600.
The seven capital sins are called
"capital" which means "head" in
Latin.
It is from these capital sins that many
sins spring. They are dispositions
toward sin and separation from God.
They do not only affect individual
sinners but also social groups and
institutions.

GOD’S GRACE
Objectives:
• To identify the meaning and

Holy Spirit
• To point out the sacraments as
a source of grace

Analyze the pictures below. Answer
the question that follow.
1. What does picture A show? How
about picture B?
2. What do you receive from these
sacraments?
3. How does receiving these
sacraments make a difference in
your life?
St. Paul confessed, "What I do, I do
not understand. For I do not do
what I want, but I do what I hate"
(Romans 7:15). The devil is always
there to tempt and lead one to sin.
"Your opponent, the devil, is
prowling around like a roaring lion
looking for [someone] to devour"
(1 Peter 5:8).
"We ourselves, although we have the
Spirit as first fruits, groan inwardly while
we await the redemption of our bodies"
(Romans 8:23). Yet Paul is confident
because the Spirit "helps us in our
weakness" (Romans 8:26), strengthening
our spirits against the brute forces,
temptations, and oppressive powers that
enslave us (CFC 1318).
One needs the grace of God to
strengthen him/her in this spiritual
battle.
Grace is God's loving presence. It is the
Spirit within the person-guiding
strengthening, protecting, and
sanctifying. Hence, the Spirit is:
1. needed from the start to obey the
love commandment and
2. the goal of our loving, namely, a
deeper, fuller presence of God in us
through the Holy Spirit. -CFC 952
The Gifts of the Spirit is a Spirit who:
1. adopts us as children of the Father;
2. enables us to love as Christ
commanded;
3. empowers us to bear witness to Christ
and to know the truth;
4. draws us into community unity and
service; and
5. inspires us to live a truly Christian life.-
CFC 1309
The sacraments are celebrations of
God's loving presence. They are "an
encounter of God's adopted sons and
daughters with their Father, through
Christ in the Spirit, expressed as a
dialogue through actions and words"
(CCC 1153).
