Introduction
Overview of EV Charging Stations
 Rise in electric vehicle adoption and infrastructure development.
 Importance of reliable charging stations for user convenience and grid
stability

Role of Distribution Transformers

 Connects charging stations to the electrical grid.
 Facilitates efficient power transfer while maintaining quality

In this presentation we will see the methods to reduce the harmonic distortions by
making the Matlab Simulink model.

Objective & Problem Statement

 Distribution transformers connected to EV charging stations experience

power quality issues like voltage fluctuations and harmonic distortions due
to nonlinear loads.

 This project aims to analyze and reduce these issues using harmonic filters
to improve transformer efficiency and reliability.

 Simulate power quality issues in distribution transformers
at EV charging stations.
 Implement harmonic filters to improve transformer
performance using MATLAB.

Objectives
 Implement harmonic filters to improve power quality.
 Evaluate the effectiveness of filters in reducing THD and
enhancing efficiency.

METHODOLOGY
 Harmonic Filters: Install harmonic filters to absorb or block specific
harmonics generated by non-linear loads.

 K-Rated Transformers: Use transformers specifically designed to handle

harmonic loads, known as K-rated transformers.

 Regular Maintenance: Perform regular maintenance on transformers to

detect and address any emerging issues related to harmonic distortion.

Advantages:-
 Enhances transformer lifespan by lowering thermal stress
 Improves power quality by reducing harmonics
 Supports reliable EV charging infrastructure
 Demonstrates effectiveness of harmonic filters

Disadvanteges:-
 Limited real-time accuracy in simulations
 THD can’t be measured in pure DC waveform

Applications

 Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

 Distribution Transformer Design and Protection

 Smart Grid Implementation

 Urban and Industrial Power Distribution Planning

 Development of Harmonic Mitigation Solutions

Future Scope
 In the future, this project can be improved by adding real-time monitoring
using IoT sensors to track power quality.

 AI-based systems can also be used to predict transformer issues early.

Better filters can be added to reduce harmonics more effectively.

 The hardware setup can be upgraded for use in bigger EV charging stations.

06/14/2025 10:22 AM 16
CONCLUSION
The sudden increase of EVs is a threat to the power quality because of
harmonics, increased power demand, voltage fluctuation and power loss etc.
In this project when we used harmonic filter then THD reduced upto 8 to 10%
while charging batteries.
Therefore we could see the decrease in THD while charging EV using
harmonic filter.
