OCEAN CURRENTS
The water of the oceans is constantly in motion.
It moves horizontally and vertically both.
The movement of ocean waters are of three types :
Waves: are alternate up and
down movement of water
particles caused by action of
winds. The shape and height of Tides: are the periodic
the wave depends on the speed
of the wind. A light breeze rise and fall of water
produces gentle waves, while level in the sea which
violent and stormy waves often occurs at regular
causes wide spread destruction. intervals twice a day.
Ex : Tsunami When the water of the
sea rises it is high tide
and when it falls it is a
low tide. Tides are
caused by the
gravitational pull of the
IMPORTANCE OF TIDES
During high tide the water level near the
coast rises. This allows big ships to enter or
leave harbours safely.
Tides help in fishing too.
Tides are a source of energy. During high tide
its energy can be harnessed to generate
electricity. Ex Canada, France and japan
Currents - The horizontal movement of
masses of ocean water in the form of broad
streams in definite directions is called ocean
currents. The factors which give rise to ocean
currents and modify their courses are:
Action of planetary winds on the surface of
ocean waters.
The shape of coastlines
The rotation of the earth
Variations in the density of ocean water is due to differences
in temperature and salinity.
Warm ocean waters are less dense as compared to cold
ocean waters
Water with less salinity is also less dense than waters where
the salinity is high.
The current travels clockwise in the NH and anti-clockwise in
the SH
The ocean currents which carry warm waters from the
equatorial region towards the polar region are known as
warm currents.
The currents that carry cold waters from the polar regions to
the equatorial region are called as cold currents .
EFFECTS OF OCEAN
CURRENTS
1. Warm currents raise the temperature of the coast along which
they flow while cold currents lower the temperature.
2. Winds blowing over the warm currents are moist and bring
rainfall to the coastal regions.
3. The places where warm and cold current meet a thick fog is
produced.
4. In places where warm and cold currents meet tiny organisms
called planktons are found in abundance.
5. Ocean currents influence navigation. Ships sailing along the
current will sail faster and save time and fuel.
