Quadratics
A quadratic expression is an expression in which the highest
power of the variable is 2. For example,
t 2
x2 – 2, w2 + 3w + 1, 4 – 5g2 ,
2
The general form of a quadratic expression in x is:

ax2 + bx + c (where a ≠ 0)

x is a variable.
a is a fixed number and is the coefficient of x2.
b is a fixed number and is the coefficient of x.
c is a fixed number and is a constant term.

Remember: factorising an expression is the opposite of expanding it.

Expanding or multiplying out

(a + 1)(a + 2) a2 + 3a + 2

Factorising

When we expand an expression we remove the brackets.

When we factorise an expression we write it with brackets.

Quadratic expressions of the form x2 + bx + c can be factorised if
they can be written using brackets as
(x + d)(x + e)
where d and e are integers.
If we expand (x + d)(x + e) we have,
(x + d)(x + e) = x2 + dx + ex + de
= x2 + (d + e)x + de
Comparing this to x2 + bx + c we can see that:
 The sum of d and e must be equal to b, the coefficient of x.
 The product of d and e must be equal to c, the constant term.

3. Re-write the expression splitting the bx term into two
components using these factors.
3x(2x - 3) + 4(2x - 3)
4. Factorise in pairs taking the HCF of each.
(2x - 3) (3x + 4)
5. The factor in brackets is common to both.

The difference of two squares
If you have an expression in the form x2 – a2
where a is a square number
then x2 - a2 = (x + a)(x – a)
Example - Factorise
x2 - 36 = (x + 6)(x – 6)
a=6
Task - Factorise
1. x2 - 9 2. x2 - 64 3. x2 - 144 4. x2 - 400
(x + 3)(x – 3) (x + 8)(x – 8) (x + 12)(x – 12) (x + 20)(x – 20)
