CBC
Electronic Cell Counter
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
• Group of tests that examine different
components of the blood.
CBC values
• RBC count
• Hemoglobin
• Hematocrit
• RBC indices (MCV, MCH & MCHC)
• WBC count and differential
• Platelet count
• White Blood Count (WBC): actual number of
white blood cells per volume of blood.
4 - 11 X 103/µL (mm3)
• WBC differential: types of WBC present.
There are five basic white blood cell types:
Neutrophils 50-70 %
Eosinophils 1-3 %
Basophils 0-1 %
Lymphocytes 20-40 %
Monocytes 2-9 %
• Red Blood Cells (RBC): actual number of red
blood cells per volume of blood
4.5-6.2 million/mm3 males
4.0-5.5 million/mm3 in female
• Hemoglobin (Hb): amount of the oxygen carrying
protein in the blood
Hgb range is 13.5-17.5 g/dl for males
Hgb range is 11.5-15.5 g/dl for females
• Platelets (PLT): actual number of platelets per volume
of blood
Normal Range = 150 to 450 x 103 cells/L
Hematocrit (HCT) or packed cell volume (PCV): It is the
percentage of red blood cells in relation to your total blood
volume
HCT 40%-52% male
36%-48% female
Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV ):
a measurement of the average size of RBCs
Normal range 80-100 fL, RBCs considered Normocytic
If < 80 fL Microcytic
If > 100 fL Macrocytic
• Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH ): the average
amount of hemoglobin inside a RBC-content-weight
•MCH=Hb (g/L)/ RBC (in millions/ul
Normal range: 27-31 pg/cell
• Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin concentration
(MCHC): the average concentration of hemoglobin in a
given volume of packed red blood cells
Normal range: 32-36 g/dL
MCHC= Hb (g/dl) / HCT (%)
It determines whether anemia is hypo- normo- or hyperchromic
•Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW): a variation in the size of RBCs
The "width" in RDW-CV is sometimes thought of as "misleading,"
since it in fact is a measure of deviation of the volume of RBCs, and
not directly the diameter.
However, "width" refers to the width of the volume curve
(distribution width), not the width of the cells. Thus, it is a
reasonably accurate term.
Mathematically the RDW-CV is calculated with the following
formula:
RDW-CV = (Standard deviation of MCV ÷ mean MCV) × 100.
Red cell Distribution Width (RDW)
• An index of RBC size variation
• May be used to quantitate the amount of
anisocytosis on peripheral blood smear
• Normal range is 11.5% to 14.5% for both men
and women.
Mean Platelets Volume (MPV)
The MPV is a measure of the average volume of platelets in
a sample and is analogous to the erythrocytic MCV.
• Anisocytosis: variation in the size of RBCs.
• Poikilocytosis: variation in the shape of RBCs.
