Trait

Leadership can be viewed through Trait Theory, which posits that leaders are born with specific traits such as empathy, integrity, decisiveness, problem-solving skills, and emotional intelligence. However, Trait Theory has limitations, including a lack of empirical evidence on how traits affect leadership performance and varying lists of traits from different authors. Additionally, it does not account for other factors influencing leadership and is more predictive in weak situations.

Leadership: Trait Theory

According to leadership a person that is able to influence a group

towards the achievement of goals is a Leader.

The question arises here is whether leaders are born or made?

According to Trait theory  Leaders are born

According to Behavioral theory  Leaders can be made

Trait theories: Theories that consider personality, social, physical,

or intellectual traits to differentiate leaders from non leaders.
Major traits of an effective leader
• Empathy: The ability to understand and connect with others on an
emotional level. This helps leaders build trust and foster
relationships with their team members.

• Integrity: Being someone who stands behind their word and

shows up when they say they will. This builds trust with the people
they lead.

• Decisiveness: The ability to make decisions, particularly when

under pressure.

• Problem-solving skills: Having the ability to solve problems.

• Emotional intelligence: Having a high level of emotional

intelligence.
Limitation of Trait theory
• No surveys show how different degrees of the same trait
affect the leader’s behavior and performance.
• Trait theory does not consider other leadership factors.
• Different authors suggest different lists of traits, making
the theory less specific.
• Trait theory doesn’t provide any comparative results.
• Traits predict behaviour better in weak rather than strong
situations.
• Unclear evidence of the cause and effect of relationship
of leadership and traits.
