Process Safety Management

Process Safety is a systematic framework aimed at preventing and controlling incidents involving hazardous materials, emphasizing the importance of design, engineering, and operational practices. It is distinct from occupational safety, focusing on incidents that can lead to significant harm, including injuries, environmental damage, and economic loss. The culture of Process Safety involves continuous improvement and shared responsibility among all stakeholders.

What is Process Safety

 Process Safety is a disciplined framework for managing the

integrity of processes with hazardous material by applying good
design principles, engineering and operating practices.

Process safety is everyone’s responsibility

Continuous improvement

A way of thinking and acting

It is a culture
What is Process Safety
 It is a systematic approach for the prevention and control of
incidents that have the potential to release hazardous materials or
energy. Such incidents can cause fire or explosion, toxic effects and
could ultimately result in serious injuries, asset damage,
environmental impact and damage to company reputation

 Process safety needs to be considered seperately from

occupational safety.

 An incident is reported as a process safety incident if it

meets all three criteria (process involvement, location
and hazardous release)
Why Process Safety is Important?

 Can cause major accidents.

Hydrocarbon Releases, H2S Releases,
Fires, Explosions, Environmental Pollution.

 Can have catastrophic effects.

Multiple injuries, fatalities, substantial
economic, property and/or environmental
damage.
Examples of Process Safety Incidents

 Gas leak from pipeline, vessels, gas compressors etc.

 Crude oil leak from crude pipeline, oil tanks, vessels, etc.

 Condensate leak from condensate line, tanks or vessels.

Process Safety vs Occupational H&S

Process Safety incidents have low

likelihood but high consequences

 Not as intuitive as most people lack

personal experience
 Needs more robust analysis tools to
identify hazards
 The unacceptable consequences
need more reliable controls
 Incidents can be massive and have
lasting impacts
