APPLICATION OF

CURRENT
ELECTRICITY
By Mr Mulenga K
POWER
• Recall that,
“Power is defined as the ability to do work.”
• In electricity, we can defined it as the rate at which electric energy is
converted to other forms.
• These forms includes
i. light energy (bulb)
ii.Sound energy (speaker)
iii.Kinetic energy (motor)
Rating of appliances
• Appliances are rated in Watts whose value depends on its ability to
use electricity (converting energy)
• If the bulb is rated as 100W means it is able to convert 100J electric
energy to light per second
• Recall that;
i. I= (1)
ii. p.d (V) = subject, E = VQ (2)
iii. E = VQ substituting Q with It, E = V
iv. P = , substituting E with E = V, P = ,
v. P = VI
Stop and think
1. A heater used on a 250V mains circuit has a 5A fuse in its plug.
Which is the highest power rating for this heater?

(Ans. P = 1250W
2. 4Ω DVD, 6Ω shaving machine and a 12Ω radio cassette are
connected at the same time in parallel across 24V power supply.

(Ans. P = ?
Cost of electric energy
• Electric energy (E) calculated using the formula;
E = Pt,
where
P – power (kW)
t – time (Hours)
Hence, the right units for energy will be, (kWh)
Cost of electric energy
• How to calculate the cost of electrical energy
1.Calculate the energy consumed in kWh .
2.Calculate the cost of electrical energy by multiplication the
total energy used with the cost per unit.
Stop and think

1. An electrical appliance is rated 250v, 500w. Find the cost of using

this appliance for 120 minutes if electrical energy costs K100 per
unit.

2. What is the cost of running a 750W electric fan for 4 hours and a
2kW heater for 2 hours if electric energy costs K150 per kWh?
Stop and think

1. A 2kW electric fun is connected to 250V mains.

a. How much current does the electric fire take?

b.What is the cost of running the electric fun for 5 hours if the cost of
a unit (kWh) of electrical energy is K900?

1. An electric appliance is rated 5000W, 250V. A man uses this appliance for
10 hours and pays K25.00 for the electrical energy used. What is the cost of
electrical energy per unit?
