INTRODUCTION TO 3-PHASE

WAG-9 LOCOMOTIVE
(ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT)

Presented by:

Manish Joshi (Dy. Manager-LME)

Vikas Gupta (Manager- LME)
LOCOMOTIVES CLASSIFICATION
REASONS FOR CHANGE
LANDMARKS
 1993 – ToT Agreement was signed between IR and ABB
transportation systems Ltd., Zurich, Switzerland
 Agreement was called IRGP – 140
 20 WAG-9 and 10 WAP-5 locomotives were imported
 1996 – First WAG-9
 1998 – First CLW make WAG-9 locomotive
 2000 – First WAP-7 locomotive ‘Navkiran’
 2000 – First WAP-5 locomotive ‘Navodit’
 2010 – First full IGBT WAG-9
WHAT IS A THREE PHASE LOCO?
 Works on single phase AC- 25 kV, 50 Hz, supply but TMs
are three phase Induction machines.
 Simple squirrel cage induction motor.
 Torque speed characteristics modified to suit traction
application with the help of VVVF.
DC Motors vs 3Ø AC Motor

• High starting torque is a traction

requirement

– DC motor is better in this

parameter

– AC motor can be intelligently

used to

attain same performance

• Power/Weight (KW/Kg) ratio

– AC 3Ø: 0.3

– DC: 0.1

• Maintenance requirements

– More wear & tear in DC Motor

SALIENT FEATURES
 Variants
 WAG-9 6000 HP, Co-Co, 460 kN Starting TE
 WA9-9H 6000 HP, Co-Co, 500 kN Starting
TE
 WAP-7 6000 HP, Co-Co, 140 Kmph
 WAP-5 5400 HP, Bo-Bo, 160 Kmph,
 Fully Suspended TM
 Microprocessor based control
 3-Phase Induction Motor drive
 Regeneration of energy
Three Phase Drive
 Maintenance – Low due to Induction Motor
 Energy Saving – High due to Regeneration
 Adhesion Characteristics - Better
 Control – Very Complex
 Initial Cost – High
 Life Cycle Cost - Low

Cooling System

 The IGBT based traction converter is designed for water

cooling (mixture of water and glycol).
 The temperature of the coolant is lowered by an external
water-to-air heat exchanger which is part of existing Oil
Cooling Unit (OCU).
 To prevent reactions with the coolant, the only materials
used inside the cooling circuit are aluminium, stainless
steel and plastic.
 The used coolant is antifrogen-N, a mixture of water and
glycol blended with inhibitors to provide protection against
corrosion.

Cooling Pump

BHEL Traction Converter

Cooling System

 Coolant is circulated in Traction Converter using

Cooling pump.
 415 VAC, 3-phase, 50 Hz supply is provided to
cooling pump from Auxiliary Converter.
 The power rating of cooling pump is 5 kW.
 The losses from the passive components, such as
capacitors, bus bars, and power cables are transferred
to the inside air of the traction converter.
 Internal fans in the cabinets ensure forced air
circulation inside the traction converter.

Auxiliary Converter

 A total of 3 Auxiliary Converters (BUR1, BUR2 & BUR3) in two

cubicles are provide in a locomotive.
 Each Auxiliary Converters has 130 kVA capacity.
 All three Auxiliary Converters are fed from single transformer
winding of rating 1000V, 334 kVA.
 Auxiliary Converter provides 3-phase AC output of 415 V (L-L)
and DC output of 110V, 80 A.
 Minimum efficiency of Auxiliary Converter in 92 % at rated load
of 130 Kva.
