PARTNER SUCCESS STORY

Decoding Complexity, Delivering Clarity: Navigating the Shift from ConnectWise Automate to ConnectWise RMM

Switch Consulting, based in Fort Collins, Colorado, specializes in seamless migrations from ConnectWise Automate to ConnectWise RMM. Serving MSPs and IT service providers, they offer post-implementation support, scalable automation strategies, and deep product expertise to preserve business logic and ensure long-term operational success.

Challenge

Many MSPs hesitate to migrate from ConnectWise Automate to ConnectWise RMM due to fears of losing functionality, breaking workflows, or inheriting undocumented systems. Frequent admin turnover compounds the issue, leaving behind complex, untracked configurations. Without a central source of truth, migrations become risky, time-consuming, and difficult to scale confidently.

Solution

Switch Consulting delivers context-aware, scalable migrations from ConnectWise Automate to RMM by decoding legacy environments, preserving business logic, and leveraging proprietary mapping processes. Their expert team ensures feature parity, stabilizes agents, and implements automation strategies, enabling MSPs to migrate confidently while reducing risk, improving workflows, and supporting long-term operational success.

Results

Switch Consulting delivers effortless, large-scale migrations—including completing complex migrations with over 45,000 agents in weeks while preserving workflows and enhancing automation. Clients gain confidence through expert guidance, feature parity, and proactive training. Switch ensures partners not only migrate successfully but evolve with ConnectWise RMM, achieving long-term operational efficiency and scalability.

Switch Consulting (Switch), founded by former ConnectWise Senior Implementation Consultant Trip Armstrong, has emerged as a premier partner for businesses transitioning from ConnectWise Automate to ConnectWise RMM. With a team composed entirely of former ConnectWise experts, Switch offers a migration experience that is not only technically sound but strategically transformative. Their ability to scale, preserve business logic, and deliver contextual intelligence makes them a standout in the ConnectWise ecosystem.

Filling the Gap: Post-Implementation Support Redefined

Trip Armstrong launched Switch Consulting in 2020 after a personal turning point led him to reevaluate his professional mission. “I had one of those close calls back in 2020,” Armstrong shared. “I wanted to create something meaningful—something I could leave behind that would have a positive impact on the world and help the industry I knew and loved.”

Having spent years at ConnectWise, Armstrong is extremely familiar with the challenges partners can face during and after the implementation of a new tool. Some need additional hand-holding, custom solution creation, or other more involved evaluations to redesign automation and secure long-term success. “Switch Consulting was born to help fill that gap, providing post-implementation support, strategic migration services, and long-term operational guidance for partners navigating the shift from Automate to RMM.

“I’ve not encountered a scenario where a client said, ‘We did this in Automate—can we do it in RMM?’ and I had to say no,” he said. “Between scripting variables,PowerShell execution, and RMM’s built-in capabilities, we can recreate or improve almost anything.”

Challenge: Legacy Complexity and Admin Turnover

One of the most common issues Switch addresses is what Armstrong affectionately calls “RMM admin left syndrome.” “You get an IT admin who’s new to RMM, they do their best, and then they get promoted,” he explained. “They leave behind undocumented scripts, plugin settings, and business logic. The next admin inherits a system they don’t fully understand—and the cycle repeats.”

Armstrong elaborated: “They create a script, put it in place, and everything works great. They’re seen as doing a good job, so they get promoted. But do they really have time to go over every piece of context with their replacement? Probably not.”

This lack of continuity creates fear around migrations. Partners worry about losing functionality, breaking workflows, or disrupting operations. “That’s where we shine,” Armstrong said. “We want to be the keepers of context for our partners. So, as you go from admin to admin, you’re not feeling that pain every time.”

Solution: Context-Aware, Scalable Migrations

Switch Consulting specializes in decoding legacy environments and delivering confident migrations. “We go in and find those contextual elements, make sure they’re backed up, and determine whether they should be recreated—or if there’s already a better way to do it in RMM,” Armstrong said.

He compares the migration to switching insurance: “It’s a change-of-life event. You want to take advantage of it, cut some of the fat, and put better systems in place.”

The process begins with agent migration. “Agents aren’t just endpoints—they’re communication methods,” Armstrong emphasized. “We make sure they’re stabilized first, including AV exclusions, directory configurations, and change control planning. There’s a lot under that first bullet point.”

Armstrong has also developed a proprietary mapping and migration process. “We recently completed a 45,000-agent migration in about six weeks,” he shared. “And we’re currently in discussions around a significant migration opportunity that was referred to us.”

Feature Parity & RMM Capabilities

Armstrong confidently addresses concerns about losing functionality. “I’ve not encountered a scenario where a client said, ‘We did this in Automate—can we do it in RMM?’ and I had to say no,” he said. “Between scripting variables, PowerShell execution, and RMM’s built-in capabilities, we can recreate or improve almost anything.”

“If you can tell me how you’d do it without an RMM product—just pen and paper—99.99% of the time, I can get it working in RMM.”

This confidence is rooted in deep product knowledge. “It’s not just me,” Armstrong emphasized. “All three consultants we use are former ConnectWise employees with years of experience implementing RMM. We know this product inside and out.”

"It’s not just me. All three consultants we use are former ConnectWise colleagues with years of experience implementing RMM. We know this product inside and out.”

Keeping Partners Ahead of Innovation

Switch also helps partners stay current with new ConnectWise RMM features. “Part of our Switch Pulse package includes training for new hires and new functionality,” Armstrong explained. “If a client wants to learn about a new feature, we schedule one-on-one or group training. We rely on ConnectWise’s feeds for updates, and we make sure our partners can apply them.”

This proactive approach ensures that partners not only migrate successfully but continue to evolve with the platform. Switch Consulting’s approach has led to effortless migrations from ConnectWise Automate to RMM, along with the preservation and enhancement of existing workflows. Clients gain confidence through deep product expertise, while scalable automation strategies are tailored to meet each partner’s unique needs.

Enterprise-Grade Migration with Enduring Support

Switch provides enterprise-level support for migrations involving over 45,000 agents and offers ongoing training and innovation enablement to ensure continued success. Their ability to scale is particularly noteworthy. “It’s not just the number of migrations we’ve done—it’s the size and complexity,” Armstrong emphasizes. “We’re extremely agile, regardless of how large the environment is.”

Switch Consulting is more than a migration partner—they’re a long-term strategic ally. With unmatched ConnectWise RMM expertise, a scalable migration framework, and a commitment to preserving business logic, Switch ensures partners don’t just move—they evolve.

As ConnectWise continues to expand its ConnectWise RMM capabilities, Switch Consulting stands ready to help partners unlock their full potential. Their work exemplifies the power of ConnectWise RMM when paired with the right guidance, making them a standout partner in the ConnectWise ecosystem.
