About us

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is the world's largest regional security organization. Its 57 participating States span the geographical area from Vancouver to Vladivostok. Born in the early 1970s as the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe, it served as an important multilateral forum for dialogue between East and West during the Cold War. It was also instrumental in tackling the numerous security challenges that arose in Europe after the collapse of communism. Today, the OSCE, its institutions, and its 16 field operations are actively involved in a broad range of security- and stability-related activities including election monitoring, human rights, legislative reform, rule of law and media freedom, as well as combating human trafficking, terrorism and the smuggling of small arms and light weapons.

🎓 Education is about shaping a better future. But for decades, young people in Central Asia lacked real spaces for academic dialogue. That changed in 2002. A small international institution quietly took root: the OSCE Academy in Bishkek. It became a space where students from across the region could come together to study, debate, and connect. Since then, over 700 graduates have shown that this school is a quiet engine of change. Alumni now serve in ministries, civil society, international organizations, and academia. Many have stayed in the region. Some are now leaders. The OSCE Academy may be small, but its impact is big. And that’s what will help shape real, lasting transformation in Central Asia. This is the Helsinki Final Act in action. Signed in 1975, the Act turns 50 this year. Through the OSCE, this landmark agreement’s principles continue to drive real, lasting change. 🔗 The real-life impact continues 👉 https://bit.ly/45aVl4T OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek #HelsinkiFinalAct #Helsinki50

📈 Public trust in police in Serbia climbed from 28% in 2008 to 44% in 2023. How? After Serbia transitioned to democracy, police recruitment and training got an overhaul. The country scrapped the outdated, militarized models and replaced them with a modern, rights-based approach. Now, over 9,000 cadets have been trained with this new method at the Basic Police Training Centre founded with the OSCE’s help. Cadets trained here better reflect the societies they serve, too: more and more women and minorities join each year. But the work isn’t done yet. Keeping the momentum alive will require continued political will—and international support. The OSCE will keep doing its part. This is the Helsinki Final Act in action. Signed in 1975, the Act turns 50 this year. Sometimes, change starts with one woman saying, “Why not me?” For years, women in policing were underrepresented and overlooked in North Macedonia. But an OSCE mentoring programme sparked a shift. 💬 Women began speaking up. 🎯 They applied for leadership roles. 🎖️ One even became North Macedonia’s first female police dog handler. “We learned to be braver and to apply for positions that people assume are meant for men — without hesitation, without prejudice,” one mentee said. Now, nearly 180 women have taken part in the programme, and this number keeps growing. Real change doesn’t always start with policies or headlines. Sometimes it starts with an empowering conversation. This is the Helsinki Final Act in action. Signed in 1975, the Act turns 50 this year. Trust begins with dialogue — and art can open the door. 🎨⁣ 20 art students from the “Alexandru Plămădeală” Republican College of Fine Arts in Chișinău and the Bender Higher Education Art College “Victor Postoikin” came together for a four-day plein air workshop organised by the OSCE Mission to Moldova.⁣ By turning emotions into colours, these young artists from both banks of the Dniester/Nistru River used art to express feelings, share perspectives, and connect across divides.⁣ 👉 Swipe through to see how they’re creating change, one brushstroke at a time.
