On January 1st 2026, the Carbon Borders Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) initiative goes live. CBAM is initially being applied to the most carbon intensive industries and steel falls into this classification. Any steel products that enter the EU, from outside of the EU, will need to be recorded as well as their carbon content. A charge will then be applied based on the amount of carbon imported and the relevant price per tonne. CBAM will be applicable to all companies in Ireland, both North and South. It will also be applicable to North – South trade. AT NTS, we have been providing our customers with CBAM reports for over 12 months.
