🧬 Foro Biotech UY 2025 El foro celebró su tercera edición en el Laboratorio Tecnológico del Uruguay (LATU), consolidándose como el espacio de referencia para la biotecnología en Uruguay. Reunió a investigadores, empresas, emprendedores, estudiantes y organismos públicos para difundir ciencia, tecnología e innovación, promover la bioeconomía y fortalecer el ecosistema nacional. La jornada comenzó con la participación de Eduardo Mangarelli, decano de la Facultad de Ingeniería de ORT, Bruno Gili de Uruguay Innova y Lucila Arboleya, presidenta del LATU, quienes destacaron el rol de la biotecnología en la innovación y el desarrollo del país. 🧬 En el bloque “¿Dónde se hace Biotecnología?”, Laura Vera (Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Pando), Claudia Vanesa Piattoni, PhD (Institut Pasteur de Montevideo) y Carlos Sanguinetti (Facultad de Ingeniería de ORT) compartieron experiencias sobre cómo la investigación y la formación impulsan el desarrollo biotecnológico en Uruguay. Luego, Claudia Etchebehere (Instituto de Investigaciones Biológicas Clemente Estable), Victoria Bonnecarrere (INIA), Fabiana Rey Bentos (Latitud - Fundación LATU) y Andrea Villarino (Facultad de Ciencias – Udelar) mostraron cómo la ciencia aplicada, la innovación agropecuaria y la cooperación interinstitucional fortalecen el ecosistema nacional. El investigador Francisco Carrau (Facultad de Química – Udelar) abordó el potencial de la biotecnología aplicada a la industria alimentaria y vitivinícola. 💰 En la mesa redonda sobre inversiones en biotech, moderada por Enrique Topolansky (CIE Centro de Innovación y Emprendimientos ORT), participaron Alvaro Brunini (ANII), Mauricio Grisolia (CITES), Juan Negro (Eatable Adventures), Diego Melazzi (LAB+) y Federico Marque (GRIDX), quienes analizaron oportunidades de financiamiento e internacionalización. Las charlas cortas de empresas emergentes reunieron a Matias Machado (Scaffold Biotech), Fernando Slamovitz (Yeda Health), Lorena Betancor (Promethenz), Carmina Reyes Plascencia (POLYMERA) y Emiliano Trias, Ph.D. (Xeptiva Therapeutics), quienes presentaron proyectos innovadores en salud, materiales y tecnología con impacto global. 🧬 En la segunda charla magistral, María Pía Garat (EOLO PHARMA) compartió la experiencia de una empresa uruguaya que combina investigación y desarrollo tecnológico para crear soluciones terapéuticas de alcance internacional. El cierre estuvo a cargo de Gustavo Domínguez (Latitud) y Carlos Sanguinetti (Facultad de Ingeniería – ORT), quienes destacaron la colaboración entre instituciones como motor para seguir impulsando la biotecnología en Uruguay. El evento fue organizado por el CBI+I, Universidad ORT Uruguay, Facultad de Ingeniería de ORT, el LATU, Latitud – Fundación LATU y el PCTP.

LAVCA Week… with a twist! Last week was a busy one — I started in New York for the annual LAVCA gathering, which kicked off with the Fund Managers Meeting organized by BID Lab and BID Invest. As always, it was inspiring to attend insightful panels and reconnect with so many fund managers from across Latin America. Huge thanks to Magdalena Coronel and Ana Carolina Lustosa Rosario for being such candid and generous hosts. Then, off to Montreal — my first time visiting a buzzing and collaborative ecosystem. I spent two days at Espace CDPQ where 20+ VC funds share space, ideas, and energy. I also had the chance to meet Adam Emond-Desbiens at Centech Mtl learning more about their hands-on approach to supporting early-stage startups, and to visit TandemLaunch Ventures where we exchanged perspectives on innovation and venture creation with Marko Gojgic. Even got to meet a few Latin American founders making their mark in Canada! Nanofacile Back in New York, the week wouldn’t be complete without the traditional Argentinian dinner organized by Ricardo W. Beller and Alejandro D. Fiuza from PAG LAW bringing together all ARCAP (Asociación Argentina de Capital Privado, Emprendedor y Semilla) members in town. I never thought I’d say this, but the bife de chorizo at Buenos Aires Restaurant could rival any parrilla back home. Finally, LAVCA’s main event on Thursday offered yet another great space to strengthen existing relationships and build new ones across the Latin American VC landscape. At CITES we remain committed to closing the gap that Latin American startups face when tackling internationalization and scaling. This week I participated in the 2025 #BioSpain, an event that brings together #VCs, #startups, service providers, TTO, tech hubs, CSIC and regional agencies related to biotechnology. While the event seems to focus primarly on the Spanish ecosystem, it also has a significant international presence with high-level #KOLs participating in several pannels. Companies from our portfolio, such as CLOVERLIFE from CITES I, as well as Circa Therapeutics and SINGLESTRAND LIMITED from our new CITES II fund, were also there networking. We organized a very exclusive 😋 "BioSpain after" just for entrepreneurs born in the Río de la Plata zip code. Over beers and tapas, a lot of stories, experiences and contacts were shared. I am returning to Argentina with a lot of new perspectives, insights and opportunities... Thanks Damia Tormo for recommending BioSpain to me!
