🇦🇹🔬 Out now: New Austrian Magazine Vol. 73 – Spotlight on Quantum Science Austria   The latest issue of the New Austrian Magazine, published by the Austrian Press and Information Service at the Österreichische Botschaft Washington is fully dedicated to Quantum Science and Technology in Austria – featuring pioneering research, innovation hubs, and the people behind one of Europe’s most vibrant quantum communities.   This special issue includes a historical view on quantum science and its roots in Austria, Austria’s Nobel Prize Laureates, the countries modern quantum ecosystem and how it is shaping the presence and future. QuantA's partners will also be featured, along with players from the business world, start-ups, and political stakeholders. Some transatlantic perspectives and an Austrian view on the UNESCO International Year of Quantum Science and Technology conclude this special issue. quantA is proud of this joint collaboration and that we were able to bring so many players together to showcase Austria as quantum hub. Its #throwbackthursday to last week which took me back to Munich with my colleagues Jannek Hansen & Rémi Claessen from IQOQI Vienna - Austrian Academy of Sciences to the #LaserWorldOfPhotonics and #WorldOfQuantum. It was great to see how quantum experiments have evolved into a vibrant ecosystem fueled by startups, partnerships, and real‑world applications. It was a remarkable demonstration of how fast our field is moving from the laboratory to market-ready solutions. A big thank-you to everyone helping drive the transition from science to real-world technology. Looking forward to the next chapter in this journey.

🚀 QuSPARC Project – First Kick-Off Meeting in Vienna. Last month, the QuSPARC project held its first kick-off meeting at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI Vienna - Austrian Academy of Sciences) , part of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. 📍 Organized by Dr. Michael Trupke, the two-day meeting brought together the project partners to discuss the overall goals and outline the next steps for QuSPARC. 🔬 QuSPARC aims to take a new approach to building scalable quantum systems, which could offer significant advantages for solving complex problems that are beyond the capabilities of classical computers. These systems may also serve as the foundation for secure quantum communication, such as quantum repeaters. We’re looking forward to the collaborative work ahead and to advancing the state of quantum technology together. 🚀 Countdown to launch: The first quantum computer is heading to space this week. Developed by Philip Walther and his team at the Universität Wien, this photon-based quantum processor will be the first of its kind to operate in orbit. The satellite, scheduled to launch on June 20 from California’s Vandenberg base, will circle the Earth at an altitude of 550 km. Built in just 11 days by a dedicated team working across quantum physics, aerospace engineering, and software development, the system was designed to withstand the harsh environment of space. Once in orbit, it will demonstrate edge computing capabilities, processing data directly on board, saving time and energy by sending only results back to Earth. The project is a joint effort with the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR), CNR Milan, the IQOQI Vienna - Austrian Academy of Sciences, and Vienna-based startup QUBO Technology. This milestone strengthens Austria’s role in the global quantum race.
