We're too deep to stop now. Might be one of the most dangerous phrases in business. And we are all trapped from time to time, both as founders and more so as investors. This is the Sunk Cost Fallacy—the tyranny of past investment over future logic. It’s what keeps smart people digging in the wrong place. The antidote isn't more grit; it's brutally structured thinking. The fallacy tricks you into asking the wrong question about the past. Structured thinking forces you to answer the only question that matters: "Given what we know today, what is the best path forward?" Your past investment is not a justification for your future strategy. It is a data point. The same is true on the positive side when hitting gold. You never know when the mine is exhausted, if you did not fully understood why you hit gold in the first place. Stop measuring progress by the swing of the whip. Measure it by the distance traveled. If you're not moving, it doesn't matter how hard you flog. We all share the "Dead Horse Theory" cartoon and laugh at the corporate folly it depicts. Then we walk into our boardrooms and start swinging. The current #AI hype cycle is a prime example. We're frantically buying "stronger whips" by funding countless startups that are little more than thin wrappers for foundational models, often with very limited defensibility. This isn't just wasted motion; it's fueling an investment bubble ripe for a correction. The inevitable reckoning will separate visionaries from opportunists, and companies that never found true product-market fit will be consolidated or will simply close down. The only way forward is to change the engine. For Founders: Be brutally honest. Are you building a real, defensible engine, or just rebranding a dead horse? For Investors: Our job is not to fund the flogging. It’s to find the founders building entirely new engines. True revolutions are defined by massive leaps in "output per watt"—the exponential growth in capability achieved per unit of energy consumed. It’s time to put down the whips, step away from the carcass, and find a horse that can actually run.

In a market full of noise, I’m always more interested in the ‘why’ behind a company than the headline. It's the people and the core problems they're solving that reveal true, lasting value. Kudos to Miriam Partington and the team at Sifted for their recent piece, "10 Berlin startups to watch." It was great to see insights from sharp investors at Cherry Ventures, Project A, and Atlantic Labs. I was particularly proud to see my partner at 3VC, Eva Arh, share her perspective. Her picks highlight a crucial trend: focusing on the foundational tools that businesses will rely on for years to come.
