To break your team's echo chamber, let an AI speak first in your next strategy meeting. Sounds radical, but it's the most effective way I've found to combat the #1 killer of innovation in teams: "Fake Work." A recent Haufe report found we spend 41% of our work time on meaningless tasks. Meetings with no outcome. Reports with no readers. The tangible cost of this resistance to new ways of working is stagnation disguised as activity. Here's the new routine: Instead of another circular human-only discussion, we introduce an AI sparring partner. I call it the "Innovation Instigator" in my own set of custom Google Gems. We prompt it with our biggest challenge and let it present novel, unbiased, and sometimes uncomfortable approaches. It forces the team to react to new data, not just old opinions. Breaking out of these corporate "junk miles" requires finding a new performance state. It's a challenge I know well from another data-driven passion: cycling. Most cyclists know that just riding hard isn't enough. Real improvement comes from precision. Using data to find the exact Functional Threshold Power (FTP) allows to train exactly in the "Sweet Spot." It's a specific intensity zone where I enter a state of deep flow, holding a high output for a long time. That's the mindset we may cultivate as leaders. Using AI not just as a tool, but as our data-driven partner to find our company's "Sweet Spot" – designing routines that intentionally put us into a flowstate. Flow, according to Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, leads to peak performance and is an "optimal state of consciousness where a person is completely immersed and absorbed in an activity, characterized by intense focus, clarity, a sense of enjoyment, and a loss of self-consciousness and awareness of time."
