  • It might look like I’m standing on top of the world, and it certainly feels like I’m standing on top of the world, but I’m actually atop the highest peak in Australia, Mt Kosciuszko, 2,228 metres (7,310ft) above sea level and said to have been formed over 100 million years ago. Sometimes, part of my role as a mediator is to encourage clients to step outside of their comfort zones. So, I thought I should practise this myself a little more in 2025.  I’m not a regular hiker, but a New Year’s resolution was to do some things that take me out of my comfort zone - hence, I'm standing on top of Australia!   Did you know that the mountain was named by the first European to climb it, Polish explorer Paul Strzelecki who had two Aboriginal guides with him, and who named our highest peak after General Kosciuszko, a Polish folk hero and freedom fighter who died before Strzelecki made his ascent and never actually set foot in Australia. Upon entry, the park ranger advised that we had picked a ‘Goldilocks Day’ for our visit, not too hot, not too cold, and just right for a 4-6 hour return hike. A metal walkway covers most of the climb, which makes it a very achievable day out for hiking beginners (that would be me). There were many families on the peak that day with primary school aged children and younger, none of whom seemed to be complaining or demanding to be carried (the children – not the adults). Apparently, you can be lucky enough to have snow at the top of the peak even in summer, but although very cold on the peak that day (5C although it felt colder), sadly no snow for us. It was a very comfortable 24 – 28C for the rest of the hike.   Key take aways: 🔹 Hiking brings out the best in people – everyone we met was kind and considerate 🔹 The views are amazing, so take your time and enjoy, and pack lunch, snacks and lots of water 🔹 Blister packs are essential and worth every cent 🔹 March flies can bite through anything, including thick hiking socks – Ouch! And also seem to be attracted to insect repellent 🔹 High altitude hay fever is a real thing once you reach the peak (rookie mistake), so face masks, extra tissues, antihistamine nasal spray, non-sedating antihistamine medication, or, in my case, bring out the big guns and take Phenergan with you for the descent if you are prone.   Oh – you’ll be pleased to know that the mountain path is also home to Australia's highest public toilet at Rawson pass – a long drop variety that might explain the abundance of flies, but still very much appreciated. Stay tuned for more exciting news as Abridge Mediation ventures further outside its comfort zone in 2025 and beyond. Until then, wishing you all well for 2025 and stay safe both within and outside your comfort zones, whatever and wherever they may be!
