ANSTO was proud to participate in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) LABONET 2025 Technical Meeting on Advanced Techniques for Radioactive Waste Characterisation, held earlier this month at CEA Cadarache, France. Our Waste Characterisation Lead, Anton Peristyy, chaired a session on waste characterisation for clearance and presented an update on the characterisation of intermediate level liquid waste (ILLW) at ANSTO. Construction is progressing on the ANSTO Synroc® waste treatment plant, designed to manage waste from nuclear medicine production in Australia. This first-of-its-kind facility globally will link nuclear medicine production with radioactive waste treatment, enabling true end-to-end lifecycle management. Characterisation of ILLW is an important step in preparation for the commissioning of this waste treatment facility, driven by a collaborative team from ANSTO Synroc®, Waste Management Services and Nuclear Medicine. ANSTO’s recent export of spent fuel is an excellent illustration of a technically complex, highly secured and carefully orchestrated event. At ANSTO, we undertake many highly complex, scientific endeavours to benefit the Australian people and the world of nuclear science and technology. The export of spent fuels from our OPAL multi-purpose reactor is a great example of the kind of carefully coordinated, safety-driven, highly technical work we do. We’re so pleased to share some on-the-road footage of this spent fuel export. ANSTO was thrilled to showcase our innovative food origin technology and the response has been remarkable. At its core, this tech tackles food fraud, the global, multi-billion-dollar issue of mislabelled or substituted food products. With consumers expecting to know where their food comes from with certainty, the need for trusted verification has never been greater. Our solution is highly reliable across a wide range of natural products, from seafood, fruit to bushfood, vegetables and grains, and is easy to use in the field with a portable handheld XRF scanner. We are set up and ready to go. From 8–10 October, ANSTO is proudly presenting its groundbreaking food origin technology at the Australia Pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. Led by Dr Debashish Mazumdar, the project utilises nuclear science and machine learning to verify the geographic origin of food with an accuracy of over 85%. It’s all about decoding the environmental fingerprint, the unique geochemical and isotope signature that plants and animals absorb from their surroundings. Australia and Japan share a long history of scientific collaboration. These archival images from 1985 show Professor Maxwell Howard Brennan, Chairman of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission (now ANSTO), and Mr Tsuneo Fujinami, President of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (now the Japan Atomic Energy Agency), signing a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in Synroc technology, Australia’s breakthrough in radioactive waste treatment technology. Just last month, ANSTO and the JAEA renewed our Memorandum of Cooperation alongside the 69th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference, underscoring our shared commitment to advancing the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology.
