Globally, 1 in 6 of us live with a disability — and up to 80% of those are non-visible. That’s more than 1 billion people. This National Hidden Disability Week (19–25 October), we’re shining a light on the experiences of people whose disabilities aren’t always seen. 🌻 At Aspect, we believe true inclusion happens when communities work together. That’s why our Aspect Autism Friendly team partners with organisations like Disney Theatrical Group, the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Queer Sporting Alliance to create spaces where Autistic people feel genuinely welcome, supported and included. For more than 8 years, guided by lived experience, we’ve been working with partners across Australia to turn good intentions into lasting impact. Hear how these partnerships are helping create a more inclusive Australia for everyone ❤ #AutismFriendly #HiddenDisabilities #Accessibility #CommunityAccess #Inclusion #SocialImpact #Aspect #Leadership #HiddenDisabilityWeek Hidden Disabilities Sunflower - Australia & New Zealand Tom Tutton

✨ Reflecting on Today’s Community of Practice at NSW Parliament House ✨ Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) had the privilege of hosting NSW’s inaugural Community of Practice, bringing together over 140 participants passionate about creating inclusive experiences for autistic students. The atmosphere was vibrant and collaborative as we shared lived experiences and professional expertise, all aimed at improving educational outcomes for our students with autism. We were fortunate to hear from outstanding speakers who generously shared their insights, ideas, and practical suggestions or enhancing educational outcomes for students with autism. It was inspiring to listen to parents recount their journeys in finding the right educational settings for their children, highlighting the importance of collaboration in this process. Teachers and principals showcased innovative ways to enhance collaboration with families and emphasised the crucial need to raise the voices of students. Their contributions are vital to setting meaningful educational goals and outcomes for all learners. A significant highlight was hearing from remarkable students like Eliza Tait and past students Michael Theo and Angus Hammill, who spoke passionately about the difference educators can make for the next generations of autistic learners. Their insights were both moving and inspiring! A heartfelt thank you to Greg Warren MP who sponsored this event and to Minister Kate Washington MP for your inspirational words at the start of the day. We were also delighted to have Minister Janelle Saffin provide her closing remarks and support as Co-Chair for the ‘Parliamentary Friends of Autism’ and to everyone who contributed to such a meaningful day. What a great way to spend a day at Aspect’s Community of Practice: Inclusion through Collaboration at NSW Parliament House. Incredible speakers from start to finish from across the sector, sharing inclusion perspectives from research, therapy, autistic advocates and educators. My absolute highlight was Eliza Tait ‘s passionate presentation on her year 12 research into twice exceptional students. Eliza is Deputy Premier of the NSW Youth parliament and a year 12 student. Her personal perspective and eloquence was inspiring. The future of education is in safe hands with Eliza! Today reminded me why I do this work. I had the privilege of speaking on the Best Practice in Schools panel and hearing so many incredible voices - Craig Smith, Eliza Tait, Jess Rowlings, Jill Hellemans, Melanie Meers, Anna Brady, Jenny Zagas, Maryanne Gosling, Kathleen Davey, Avalon Nixon and Dr Chris Edwards (amongst many others!). There was such humility and honesty in the room. We spoke about the real barriers to inclusion, resourcing and individualisation and the power of student voice. Collaboration isn’t about roles or titles. It’s what happens between us, in the shared space where communication, learning and wellbeing meet. For those of us working in disability and education, it was a reminder of what genuine collaboration really means. Role release isn’t about stepping back - it’s about sharing our knowledge so others can carry it forward. When every professional sees communication, regulation and connection as part of their role, we stop working in silos and start building capacity. That belief became the foundation for MyComms, created to make personalised, sustainable communication supports easier to create, share and own. Collaboration itself between a brilliant teacher (Jess Shahbazi) and myself! When we build with people, not for them, we don’t just support learning…. We build belonging. #AutismEducation #Collaboration #CommunicationAccessibility #SpeechPathology #Inclusion #UDL #MyComms

We’ve already heard from an incredible mix of voices: Dr Ben Bailey (University of Newcastle), Eliza Tait (NSW Youth Parliament), Joanne Tisdell (Aspect South East Sydney School), Melinda Dinale (Sydney Catholic Schools), Michael Theo (Actor and Autism Consultant), and many others - all sharing valuable perspectives on strengthening inclusive education for Autistic students. Run for Autism is in full swing with 6,972 participants and 692 teams stepping up for the cause and with their support we have raised $905,327 so far. What an incredible achievement! 🙏 Thank you for your incredible support and commitment to making a difference. Every step and every dollar raised is changing lives. Today, we’re putting the spotlight on one of our standout teams, CFH Fitness, near Hurtsville. Let’s hear what fuels their passion and purpose: "At CFH Fitness, we’ve always believed that a gym should be more than just a place to train, it should be a community that supports, uplifts, and makes a real difference both inside and outside the walls of our facility. This October, our community has proudly decided to get behind the Run for Autism charity initiative led by Aspect. With over 200 members, including families with children on the autism spectrum, this cause is very close to our hearts. Beyond our own community, we also partner with Connect Community and Respite, working directly with individuals with autism to build not just fitness, but confidence, resilience, and a stronger sense of belonging. Even before October officially begins, our members have already raised over $5,000 - a result that has us both humbled and motivated to keep pushing. Each Saturday throughout the month, we’ll be lacing up our shoes at 5:45am, running side by side to contribute to our overall running target and to show our support for families living with autism. For us, it’s about more than kilometres covered, it’s about standing together for a cause that truly matters and showing that when we run as one, we can make a difference."
