Really good chat with Harry Stebbings on 20VC. We covered a lot. AI, the future of software development....and who I'd get to bail me out of jail. Give it a listen. 🎧
So Atlassian is on a fricking tear. In the last few months they have spent $1.6BN on M&A. - DX Labs: $1BN - The Broswer Company: $610M - Cycle: Undisclosed I think Mike Cannon-Brookes is one of the most exceptional leaders in technology. The man has scaled Atlassian to: - $5BN ARR (FY 25’) - 13,000 employees - The dude even owns several sports teams (what a hero!) Today we sit down with the most “unreasonable man” in tech for a discussion like never before. The Secret to Co-CEOship - Find the sweet spot of shared responsibilities: Scott and I overlap by 60-80%. - We interchange roles & functions over various periods of time. - You need a clear understanding of roles but also a shared context to make it work. 2. We Will Have More Devs and More Software in a World of AI - Software will be cheaper to build & we are not running out of ideas for software anytime soon. - There will be more devs & they will be far more efficient. - We will create far more technology. 3. Why None of the AI Startups Today Have a Moat and Why It Does Not Matter - Everyone is copying each other & the switching costs are near zero. - Defensibility in the future will come from value, data, and workflows. - Incumbents & startups both have a good shot at winning. 4. Does per Seat Pricing Die in a World of AI - There will be 2 logical replacements: per-value delivered & consumption model. - Customers hate the consumption model & it is hard to measure per-value outcomes. - Seat-based pricing won’t die, but it will likely mix with one of these two. 5. The Single Greatest Threat to Atlassian Today? - Our biggest threat is losing our creativity. - We want to be a multi-decade technology company. - We need to be constantly reinventing ourselves, not defending past wins. 6. Fave Quote from Tobias Lütke @ Shopify - A founder’s job is to fight the entropy of ambition - We cannot be complacent: Fight for every customer and user. - Stay hungry, act small: There is a long way to go. #founder #funding #business #investing #vc #entrepreneur #startup #investment #20VC
