Meet 'Alice' and 'Bob' 🖥️ 🖥️ These two computers are connected by a quantum-secure link that could give Australia’s internet an in-built security alarm, powered by the laws of physics. Together with AARNet (Australia's Academic and Research Network) and QuintessenceLabs, CSIRO demonstrated a quantum key distribution (QKD) system that uses physics to create unbreakable encryption keys. If hackers try to eavesdrop (aka, 'Eve') or intercept communication between Alice and Bob, the QKD detects it and takes action. The 12.7km link is one of Australia’s first real-world demonstrations of QKD. Next, we’ll test the link across a longer @AARNet fibre route before exploring a route between Sydney and Canberra. Building trust in a world of climate confusion 🌩️ Cyber Security Month is a great reminder that cyber threats go beyond hackers and malware. Misinformation can disrupt cyber systems, weaken digital infrastructure, and even impact emergency alerts during climate events. Climate misinformation is more than a digital issue — it can confuse us, slow down emergency responses, and make it harder for communities to adapt to real-world challenges. When we’re overwhelmed or uncertain, we’re more likely to fall for misleading claims. But we have the power to change this. By building media literacy, encouraging open conversations, and weaving fact-checking into our everyday decisions and policies, we can strengthen our collective resilience. We need to empower individuals and communities to critically assess information, collaborate across sectors, and support transparent communication. The future of climate resilience depends on our ability to recognise and counter misinformation together. AI can help improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, but only if it’s shaped by their voices, data and knowledge systems. CSIRO has released a new report, Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare in Australian Indigenous Communities, highlighting the need for Indigenous-led approaches to build safe, responsible and culturally grounded AI. The project engaged 53 Indigenous leaders, clinicians and researchers in national workshops. Three priorities for responsible AI in Indigenous health emerged: • Building AI health literacy and cultural appropriateness • Protecting Indigenous data sovereignty • Supporting self-determination The team will now co-design AI tools for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health built on trust, equity and respect. The project was co-led by CSIRO’s Australian e-Health Research Centre, Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO), Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service Brisbane of Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health, and Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet. For week two of Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2025 (Oct 1–31) 🔐 we’re looking at deepfake prevention and detection. 👇 Kristen Moore is a research scientist in cybersecurity at CSIRO’s Data61 with a keen interest in ethical AI, digital safety and machine learning applications. In a recent interview with The Daily Telegraph, Kristen addressed the topic of deepfake prevention and detection. “Deepfake technology is evolving very rapidly, it’s improving month by month, whereas just a few years ago most fakes looked really clumsy. To avoid falling for deepfake scams, you should be very wary of urgent requests, because urgency is always a red flag. "A really important one to remember is that real businesses and public figures won’t ask you for money or personal details in this way.⚠️ "But being mindful of what you share publicly can reduce your risk, and using multi-factor authentication for your accounts makes it much harder for anyone to misuse your likeness."🔒 Explore resources for Cyber Security Awareness Month here: http://bit.ly/4nET9ea

Does AI pose an existential risk? ✅ or ❌ ? The Conversation Australia + NZ asked five experts for their thoughts on the risk of AI, with 3 out of 5 respondents answering no. One of those experts was CSIRO's Data61 Research Scientist Sarah Vivienne Bentley. "AI is an extraordinary tool that can undoubtedly help the human race. But like any other tool, it’s only as good as the people wielding it."
