In a move expected to generate tens of millions of dollars for the South Australian economy, Cathay Pacific will soon resume direct flights between Adelaide and Hong Kong. This announcement completes the re-establishment of all international routes flying into Adelaide before the COVID-19 outbreak. Say hello to Colleen Moore 👋 Colleen started volunteering at the South Australian Museum in 2008. Before that she had been a school principal working 60+ hours a week. When she retired, she realised she needed something interesting to fill up her day. She started out at the Museum greeting visitors and hosting tours. During the pandemic, her role shifted into the Discovery Centre – where she still is, helping care for the animals that live there. Colleen says, “Working with the lizards has been fantastic, I used to be scared of worms, now I breed them for the lizards to eat!” To anyone considering volunteering Colleen says, “It is incredibly rewarding, and you learn so much as well. On World Bee Day we celebrate a South Australian Museum research team's description of 71 new resin pot bee species. Volunteering is incredibly valuable. And while we should appreciate volunteers every day, National Volunteer Week is a chance to really shine a light on the unpaid work that’s being done across our state. The Art Gallery of South Australia has around 200 volunteers who generously give their time and expertise to enhance the experience of visitors and assist the work of staff. Among those volunteers is Gai, who has been with the gallery since 2008. SA Law Week kicks off today and there’s a packed week of community events on offer, from the Walk for Justice at Adelaide Oval to a free webinar on accessing legal help, and a number of legal pop-up events throughout the city, suburbs and regions. The team from Legal Services Commission of South Australia will be launching SA Law Week with a pop-up legal info booth at the Adelaide Railway Station on Monday from 10 am. 17 May is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) – it marks the date in 1990 when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. IDAHOBIT is observed each year to celebrate this milestone and raise awareness of the stigma and discrimination that LGBTQIA+ communities still face today. But it’s more than just a day – it’s about LGBTQIA+ inclusion year-round.
