  • This #WorldCancerDay, we recognise that every cancer journey is unique. We welcome the 2025 theme, "United by Unique," that people are more than their diagnosis—they have individual needs, stories, and challenges. Cancer doesn’t discriminate, but factors like remoteness and socioeconomic status can impact diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. In Queensland, our cancer rates are 10% higher than the national average, predominantly due to higher melanoma rates making prevention and early detection critical. Our work with the health consumer coalition for prevention calls for greater focus and funding of prevention to improve the health and wellbeing of all Australians. Patient advocacy organisations play a vital role in ensuring people receive the right support beyond diagnosis—helping individuals and families navigate treatment, survivorship, and life beyond cancer. A stronger focus on personalised care and prevention is needed to improve outcomes for all. #WorldCancerDay #UnitedByUnique #PatientAdvocacy #CancerSurvivorship #prevention #earlydetection image source: Union for International Cancer Control

  • 🎄 A HEALTH CONSUMER'S CHRISTMAS WISH LIST 🎄 Experienced Consumer Representative and member of HCQ’s network Georgia Railton-Stewart was recently invited to give a speech at the Statewide Surgical Services Forum on the Future of Surgical Services in Queensland. Georgia is the sole consumer representative on the Queensland Surgical Services Clinical Network Steering Committee and the first consumer to be included on any of the Surgical Services Committees, so the forum provided an important opportunity for the consumer voice to be heard. The audience of almost 200 Queensland Health staff included surgeons, theatre staff, surgical services administrators from various HHSs, and staff from the Healthcare Improvement Unit and the Planning Branch. Undaunted by being the only consumer representative in the room Georgia’s very relatable speech was well received with positive feedback from other speakers and several requests from surgeons for copies to take back to their teams. Georgia also found the forum to be a very positive experience which she was keen to share with the HCQ network. “The rest of the forum was very interesting with some great things already being rolled out in the surgical services space, plus some excellent ideas for future planning that will make for a smoother experience for consumers, including a Patient App that looks very promising,” she said. “It was a great day and I felt very heard, respected and involved in the planning and workshopping that was facilitated on the day. “At the end of the day, I was told that it was the first time most of the people in the room had heard a Consumer Representative speak, so I'm glad what I shared was well received, and hopefully it helps lead to some positive, consumer and carer focused improvements in surgical services.” Read Georgia’s speech, aptly titled A Health Consumer’s Xmas Wish List – 12 days of Christmas Surgical Services Edition 1.0 at https://lnkd.in/g7xUtzT9 #StatewideSurgicalServicesClinicalNetwork #ClinicalExcellenceQueensland #QueenslandHealth

  • CONSUMER CONSULTATION OPPORTUNITY 📣 Contact us now to have your say. 🖥️ Review communications and referral processes for a new service. 📆 Consultations taking place THIS WEEK 18 and 19 December 2024, and in 2025 on 6 and 7 January. Health Consumers Queensland is partnering with Queensland Health to invite consumer consultation on the development of a new service. The Queensland Virtual Early Medical Termination of Pregnancy Service (QVEMToPS) is in development to offer an alternative pathway for pregnant people who would like to access medical termination of pregnancy services. The new service will not disrupt service pathways that already exist, but it will provide more options, particularly for vulnerable women who may face additional barriers in accessing termination of pregnancy care. ✅ Join a small focus group, or ✅ Request 1:1 consultation Consultation will focus on navigation of the new service online as well as feedback on information provided and content of referral forms. This consultation will not be asking consumers to share personal lived experience with termination of pregnancy services.
