Angela remembers the kindness first. The gentle smile. The way Linda’s voice made the hospital feel less daunting. When Angela was diagnosed with breast cancer, memories of her mum - who had faced the same disease - came rushing back. It felt heavy, almost too much. Then she met Linda, her McGrath Cancer Care Nurse. Linda combined compassion with clinical expertise. She checked in often, listened with care, and gave Angela the trusted guidance she needed to feel more in control. “She really listens. Her caring strength has helped me so much,” Angela says. The sun was shining, the crowd buzzing, and pink bandanas fluttered through the sea of cricket fans. Among them was Lucy, volunteering solo at the NRMA Insurance Pink Test for the very first time. 🏏 She didn’t know anyone, but that didn’t last long. “There was a lady sitting alone, and a young man joined us in the queue. We became a team - by the end of the day, we’d lost our voices from spruiking bandanas!” Lucy’s heart was in it.❤️ Cancer has touched her family deeply. “Two of my brothers passed away, and several friends too. Volunteering felt like a way to contribute,” says Lucy. Her advice? “Wear comfy shoes and enjoy the generosity. People are amazing.” At 66, Lucy says age is no barrier. “It’s an opportunity not to be missed.” Feeling inspired? We’re proud to introduce the Cancer Nurse Self-Assessment Tool (CaN-SAT), developed in collaboration with Nursing and Midwifery, Monash University  and supported by the Cancer Nurses Society Of Australia (CNSA).   Cancer nurses bring a wide range of skills and experiences to their roles. To provide exceptional care, they need support that’s tailored to their individual strengths and learning needs. The CaN-SAT is a comprehensive, validated self-assessment tool designed specifically for specialist cancer nurses. It helps them reflect on their practice, identify areas for growth, and develop with purpose. For educators, it’s a valuable resource to create targeted, meaningful training - ultimately improving outcomes for people with cancer. This is more than a tool.
