Your data is your business. Keeping it safe matters more than ever. Cyber risks are growing and the Federal Government's 2023-2030 Cyber Security Strategy is being developed to make sure small businesses, such as mortgage and finance brokers, are equipped and supported to defend against cyber threats. We have made a submission to the strategy, calling for practical reforms on: • secure digital tools • fit-for-purpose regulation • collaboration with industry. With October being Cyber Security Awareness Month, the MFAA encourages members to explore and make use of the tips and resources the Australian Signals Directorate provides to help keep your business cyber safe. 📊 Building stronger broker capability in commercial and asset finance Over September and October, MFAA members across Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth attended our Commercial and Asset Finance Workshops. These were designed to help brokers strengthen their commercial lending expertise and grow their businesses. Led by David McCleery, co-founder of MCP Financial Services, the workshops gave brokers practical tools to understand their clients' needs, analyse business performance, build strategic referral networks and deliver higher-quality loan submissions. With more brokers expanding into commercial lending, these sessions provided invaluable insights to help members meet the rising demand from clients and capitalise on new opportunities in this growing sector. A huge thank you to David McCleery, gold partner Commonwealth Bank, and our supporters ANZ, La Trobe Financial, Pepper Money ANZ, Assetline Capital, MA Money, Platform Finance, Connective, Thinktank Property Finance and RedZed, and the members who attended for making this series a success. 📈 Advancing professionalism in broking At today’s Credit Law 2025 conference on the Gold Coast, MFAA Executive, Professional Development and Member Engagement Dan Walsh shared key insights on the path to professionalisation in the mortgage and finance broking industry. Dan spoke about the MFAA’s commitment to lifting industry standards, highlighting our goal for the Diploma to become the benchmark qualification and the launch of the Mortgage Finance Professional Australia (MFPA) designation, which is the first professional mortgage broker designation in Australia. He also discussed how broker market share has reached a record 77.6%, reflecting the introduction of the Best Interests Duty in 2021, the increasing trust Australians place in brokers and the value they provide beyond the loan. It was a privilege for the MFAA to contribute to this leading industry event alongside respected speakers including ASIC Commissioner Alan Kirkland, ACCC Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe and Australian Financial Complaints Authority Lead Ombudsman Small Business and Transactions Suanne Russell.
