"We get asked that a lot - how much will this cost?" Scott Laird from Reds10 and I spoke about the pathway towards a paradigm shift in construction. Pricing construction projects is shifting from art to science. To better understand cost, having immediate access to reference data will become table-stakes. We unpacked this and how AI is a competitive advantage in our recent webinar. Full recording below👇

Really excited to share a recent article I worked on in partnership with Procore Technologies - Streamlining the Buy-Out: Reducing Scope Gaps, Delays & Margin Erosion. 🗒️ TL;DR: - Digital Procurement is a genuine solution to help contractors win more work and improve employee morale. - Time and cost go hand in hand, the more time your commercial team have; the more likely they are to improve your margin. - Scope gaps are the leading cause of margin erosion, spreadsheets work, but there are much better solutions. - How to realistically overcome the frequency & cost of Non-Recoverable variations = Stop repeating the same mistakes every new project. Having started my career as a Quantity Surveyor, I know how challenging the procurement process can be, and throughout my experience I’ve seen projects run into avoidable issues, delays, cost overruns, and shrinking or non-existent margins as a result of misaligned scope, poor design or simply overworked teams with limited time to do the proper due diligence. Fast forward to today, and I’ve had the chance to bring those lessons into construction technology. Partnering with Procore gave me the opportunity to reflect on those pain points I faced as a QS, and explore how digital tools can transform procurement, reduce risk, and give teams back valuable time. Some of the insights we explored: - Scope gaps and slow design resulting in delays on site. - Non-recoverable variations causing financial constraints on the project. - How Digital procurement workflows genuinely saves the team 50% of their time. Big thanks to the team at Procore for inviting me to collaborate on this piece and if you have any queries, please send me a message! Yesterday, we unpacked 'The AI Advantage' for Contractors. My 5 practical takeaways from chatting with Scott Laird from Reds10~ 1. Data Foundations are key to enabling AI - Using your own data is key. - Categorisation of your data (gold, silver, bronze) -> reliability / trust - Key business systems per department, API-first mentality. 2. Leadership needs their ‘Penny Dropping Moment’ - Executive buy-in first, then quick wins. - Target a friendly team, remove admin friction, let results sell the change. 3. Accelerate AI capability with dedicated staff and a clear mandate - Time & space in the diary. - Ring-fence people to experiment, issue pilot licences, set guardrails. - Iterate in the open. - Pause and reset if needed. 4. Access to live cost data to price work will be the new normal - Historical costs informing future estimates. - Science over art, relying on gut feel will reduce over time. - Giving access to comparable benchmarks across projects and sectors. 5. Training & feedback loops are key to increasing viability - Skills are the biggest blocker. - So be intentional about skills L&D. - Use human-in-the-loop review: AI drafts > people check work > correct if needed > accuracy climbs, and the system learns what “good” looks like. #Construction #Procurement #QuantitySurveyor #ConTech #Preconstruction #DigitalConstruction #AIAutomation ~~~ On a mission to save builders 1 billion hours in admin time.
