Segera is a private 50,000 acre wildlife conservancy and award-winning eco-safari retreat in Kenya, East Africa

About us

Situated in the center of Laikipia, one of Kenya’s richest ecosystems in terms of wildlife diversity and animal population densities, Segera houses many endangered animals. It is the rangeland of elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, monkeys, cheetahs, an unusually high population of giraffes, approximately 250 native bird species, and most of the East African plains game animals (including Grant's and Thompson's gazelles, eland, Jackson's hartebeest and Oryx). Endangered species such as the Grevy's zebra and the very rare African Wild Dog, whose population is now growing in remarkable numbers throughout all of Laikipia, also live here. Segera's mission is to invest in research, listen to the experience of local communities and stakeholders, and apply the knowledge gained to create a sustainable, ecologically and socially responsible retreat that protects and preserves the integrity of the ecosystem found within it, encourages communication, participation and creative expression, and serves as a model for the vision of an Ecosphere in the healthiest possible state. Segera successfully applies the Zeitz Foundation’s 4Cs (conservation, community, culture and commerce) approach on the ground.

  • Travel is changing. More and more, guests are seeking destinations that go beyond “bucket list” checkboxes, looking instead for places that balance experience with responsibility. In a recent article, writer Mandy Applegate explores how travelers are rethinking overtourism and choosing destinations that prioritize conservation, community, and culture. We’re proud that Segera is highlighted as part of this conversation. For us, it’s a reminder that meaningful travel is about more than beautiful landscapes. It’s about protecting biodiversity, celebrating culture, and ensuring that tourism brings positive impact to the places and people who call them home. • Vultures may be considered part of the “Ugly Five,” but their role in the wild is anything but unappealing. By feeding on carcasses, they prevent the spread of disease, recycle nutrients back into the soil, and maintain a healthy landscape for all species. Though not always loved, these birds are essential to balance and biodiversity. Every time we see them circling high above Segera, we’re reminded that every creature, no matter how overlooked, has a vital place in the ecosystem. 📸 Nathan Mixon

  • Perched high above the trees, the Bird’s Nest offers guests a unique way to experience Segera. Sleeping under the stars, surrounded only by the sounds of the wild. As dusk settles, enjoy sundowners on the deck while watching giraffes and elephants wander below. By night, drift off beneath a sky full of stars; by morning, wake to sweeping views of the Laikipia plains and the rising silhouette of Mount Kenya. Simple, soulful, and deeply connected to the land, the Bird’s Nest is one of Segera’s most unforgettable stays. 📸 Nicola Jackson and David Crookes

The verandah lounge of the Farmhouse opens directly onto the private pool and out toward sweeping views of Mount Kenya, allowing sunlit vistas to flood in from every angle. Blending the legacy of Segera’s original ranch house with contemporary African art and design, the Farmhouse is a modern classic, designed for gathering, relaxing, and connecting to the beauty of Laikipia. 📸 Brian Siambi

Once a working horse paddock, the Paddock House has been thoughtfully restored into one of Segera’s most loved gathering spaces. With its soaring glass doors, views across the plains, and the warmth of its open fire, it’s a setting that feels both rooted in history and alive with new purpose. Whether enjoyed over a leisurely breakfast, a quiet afternoon coffee, or a chef-curated dinner, the Paddock House is where moments linger and connections deepen. 📸 Brian Siambi

The rhino carries the weight of 50 million years, yet its future hangs in the balance. Poaching and habitat loss continue to push this ancient giant toward the edge of extinction. Earlier this year, we witnessed hope in action through our collaboration with Segera  during their rhino relocation. Moving these extraordinary animals to safer, more protected habitats is a profound act of guardianship, one that ensures not only their survival, but the survival of the ecosystems they shape. On World Rhino Day, we are reminded that protecting rhinos is inseparable from protecting the wild itself. Their presence maintains balance, supports biodiversity and anchors the landscapes that sustain us all. At ROAR AFRICA, we believe conservation begins with connection. To stand before a rhino is to feel both awe and responsibility and to be called into action to protect it.

Guests on safari were treated to a rare sighting of one of Segera’s most secretive residents perched confidently atop a sunlit mound of earth. Catching a glimpse of these secretive cats is always a stroke of luck, but seeing one so still and in the open is something truly special. 📸 Brian Siambi
