Broome - a future for everyone.
About us
The Shire of Broome is located in the Kimberley Region of WA and is a favourite holiday destination for visitors from around Australia and the world with its unique history, tropical climate and natural attractions. It covers 56,000sqkm with a population of about 17,000 people. Remnants of Broome’s exotic pearling past are everywhere. The town’s multicultural community ensures an array of gourmet tastes, colourful characters and cultural influences. Chinatown is home to some of the world’s finest pearl showrooms along with other retail outlets. Broome's attractions include Cable Beach, Dampier Peninsula, Staircase to the Moon, dinosaur footprints, Courthouse Markets, heritage-listed Sun Pictures and the Shinju Matsuri Festival. While the cattle and pearling industries were the main economic drivers in the past, more recently Broome has become a high profile tourist destination, with many residents employed to share Broome’s tourism experiences with the thousands of visitors to the Kimberley during the high season. Broome’s other major industries include fishing, aquaculture, agriculture, horticulture, mining and exploration, and logistics, with the expansion of these sectors expected to generate economic growth for the region and offering greater employment opportunities into the future. With education facilities, restaurants, shopping, medical centres and a regional hospital, together with the opportunity to relax, camp and fish in the Kimberley, Broome’s lifestyle is a drawcard for travellers to settle permanently in the town. Broome is home to many government agencies which service the wider Kimberley region. With a climate ideal for outdoor activities, Broome’s many sporting clubs and recreation facilities encourage community participation.

🌱 Cross-team learning in action at the Shire of Broome At the Shire of Broome, we know that sharing knowledge across teams helps build stronger, more connected, and better-informed staff. At a recent all-staff meeting, our Parks and Gardens Coordinator delivered a fantastic session on local weed varieties and the Shire’s approach to weed management. From identification tips to control strategies, the presentation sparked great questions and new appreciation for the work of our outdoor teams. 💡 Knowledge-sharing sessions like this support collaboration, deepen organisational understanding, and highlight the diverse skills and expertise within our workforce. We’re proud to foster a culture of continuous learning — and to keep growing, together. 🌿

Working with the Shire of Broome is more than just a job – it’s about making a real impact in our community while growing skills along the way. As part of a significant infrastructure project, a new roundabout features a unique landscaping design inspired by a traditional Japanese Zen garden – a nod to Broome’s rich Japanese heritage. The design includes Bauhinia Purpurea trees, white stone, and native Cyperus conicus ground cover – blending cultural significance with sustainable landscaping. What makes this even more special is that the design was created in-house by one of the Shire’s own apprentice horticulturists, providing a valuable opportunity for hands-on experience and creative input. We’re proud to support and invest in the next generation of local talent – creating space for growth, fresh ideas, and meaningful contributions to the place we all call home
