About us
Snowy Hydro is a dynamic and growing integrated energy business that supplies electricity to more than one million homes and businesses. The Snowy Hydro Group includes our generation business and three retail companies: Red Energy, Lumo Energy and Direct Connect. Our role is to provide national energy security, help with the transition to a new era of renewables, and maintain healthy competition in the retail energy markets. Our retail companies put customers first and continue to be recognised as leaders in customer service and support. Our story began in 1949 with the construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which included nine power stations, 16 major dams, 80 kilometres of aqueducts and 145 kilometres of interconnected tunnels. Today we have a generation capacity of 5,500MW, including our gas-fired and diesel-fired assets, and are the fourth-largest retailer in the energy market. Snowy Hydro is well underway with the construction of the Snowy 2.0 pumped-hydro project, which will add 2,000MW of generation and 175 hours of storage to the energy market. As leaders in renewable energy we have also signed contracts for more than 1,000MW of renewable generation from 10 wind and solar projects. These are exciting additions to our energy portfolio that will help underpin energy security and Australia’s renewable energy future. Snowy Hydro has been incorporated under the Corporations Act (Cth) 2001 since 2002, and is governed by an independent Board of Directors. For more than 70 years, Snowy has been a proud member and supporter of the communities in which we live and work. We make a significant contribution to the local economy through jobs, investment and business opportunities.

At Snowy Energy, we're committed to supporting our Commercial & Industrial customers with their goals, most recently, the University of Newcastle We partnered to provide an industry project as part of the Career-Ready Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement program at the Newcastle University Business School Students gained invaluable exposure through guest lectures and strategic insights from our team and even had the opportunity to visit the Kurri Kurri Power Station for a guided tour. This collaboration is a great example of Snowy Energy’s commitment to partner with and support our customers. This program is CIFAL Newcastle-accredited and contributes to the UN's 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the University. We’re energised by opportunities to connect with the next generation of thinkers and leaders. It was an exciting and proud moment for all of us at Snowy Hydro, as we opened our very first Yarning Circle in Cooma ❤️ 🖤 💛 A Yarning Circle is a powerful, ancient practice that brings people together to communicate without judgement and with equality. It's a space built on trust and deep respect, allowing every single person to share their stories, wisdom, and ideas freely. Through consultation with local First Nations stakeholders, construction of our Yarning Circle has incorporated items of cultural significance. It features stone from Island Bend, offering a continuous connection to the original Snowy Hydro Scheme and Ngarigo Country. Artwork has been designed by a Ngarigo man and interpretative signage shares the Ngarigo story. We've also planted native flora, including edible plants. We were privileged to be joined by Ngarigo Elders to oversee the cleansing of the space with a smoking ceremony, and lucky enough to experience a special performance from the Gulaga Dancers, a nationally recognised dance troupe who continue the strong Djiringanj tradition of honouring the land and nature through dance and artistic connection. The Yarning Circle is available for Snowy's people and members of the community to come together to connect, share knowledge and engage with each other. It will also be a space for cultural education, performances and student engagement. It's been a labour of love from the team, and moments like this have made it all worth it. If you would like to see Snowy's new Yarning Circle, you can find it next to the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre in Cooma. #SnowyHydro #SnowyMountains #YarningCircle #FirstNations

Then vs Now! 🚚😍💪 It's hard not to reflect on Snowy's more than 75 years of history during moments like this! Last night, a super load moved through Cooma carrying the main drive of our newest Tunnel Boring Machine, Monica. Some stats: ⛟ 450 tonne load ⛟ 210 wheels ⛟ 5 trucks ⛟ 1 dedicated team. The best part about this move? More than 1500 locals lined to roads to witness this piece of Snowy Mountains history! #SnowyHydro #Snowy2 #Hydropower #HydroElectricity #Megaload #SnowyMountaions

How incredible is this shot from Snowy's own Soroush Ghaderi showing some important drilling works inside Snowy 2.0's massive transformer hall! In fact this photo was so impressive, it won first prize in the Australian Tunnelling Society 2025 photo competition! 😍 📸 The transformer hall is one of two gigantic spaces being excavated nearly 1km underground to house Snowy 2.0's hydroelectric power station. The second of these two halls (the machine hall, housing the hydroelectric turbines and generators) is big enough to fit the Sydney Opera House inside it! It's important work on a massive scale. Snowy 2.0 will help decarbonise Australia, and is crucial to transitioning to renewable energy. Congratulations Soroush! #SnowyHydro #Snowy2 #RenewableEnergy #HydroElectricity #PumpedHydro

Deep beneath the Snowy Mountains, something incredible is happening! ⛰️🤯 Nearly 1 kilometre below the surface, two huge caverns are being excavated to house Snowy 2's hydroelectric power stations. ⚡ The machine hall itself is large enough to fit the Sydney Opera House inside. If you think they look massive here, they aren't even finished yet. There's still more than 30 metres of excavation remaining. Snowy 2 will underpin Australia's transition to renewable energy, by providing enough renewable storage in it's upper reservoir (Tantangara) to power 3 million homes for week. #SnowyHydro #Snowy2 #RenewableEnergy #PumpedHydro #HydroElectricity

Not only are we underpinning Australia’s clean energy transition, but we can whole-heartedly say we’re changing people’s lives on Snowy 2.0. Tumbarumba’s Brian Graham is an amazing example of this. As a 60-year-old grandfather of five, he’s newly qualified as an electrician and is among thousands of other workers deep in the Snowy Mountains helping to build one of the most complex and challenging feats of engineering underway in the world. Snowy 2.0 is also a family affair for the Grahams - Brian's wife Judy also works on the project! Our workforce, from more than 40 different nations and backgrounds, is inspired by the same spirit of ingenuity and determination that made the original Snowy Scheme a national icon.
