October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight the impact of breast cancer and the importance of early detection. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, breast cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in Australia—after prostate cancer—and the most prevalent cancer among women. Statistically, 1 in 7 women and 1 in 550 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. To support ongoing education and professional development, Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service's BreastScreen Queensland held an Inservice Day at Sunshine Coast Health Institute, focusing on training and skill enhancement. Staff participated in sessions on data interpretation and setting administrative goals. The day also featured expert presentations, including: - Dr Rod McMurray, Sunshine Coast Health Breast Surgeon, on breast-conserving surgery - Dr Debra Furniss, Radiation Oncologist, on adjuvant radiation treatment - Shane Judd, Chief Radiographer at Sunshine Coast Health BreastScreen Clinic, on radiation licence training for radiographers - Dr Junia Larsen, Medical Director of Sunshine Coast Health BreastScreen, on breast cancer prevention, detection, and breast density research. ‼️ SIMULATION ONLY ‼️ Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service Emergency Department mutlidisciplinary team comprising of medical and nursing staff, recently took part in a high-fidelity simulation involving a critically injured burns patient following a house fire. The simulation focused on practicing escharotomy techniques and acute burns management. It incorporated a mix of real and simulated equipment, with participation room ED staff alongside actors and Sunshine Coast Health Institute staff to enhance realism. Extensive moulage was used, including realistic burn makeup, charred clothing, and the use of real burnt hair to authentically replicate the visual and olfactory cues of a severe burns patient. The immersive setup provided a valuable training opportunity for clinical staff to refine their skills in a controlled, yet lifelike environment.
