  • When opportunity travels, creativity grows. 🚐✍️ In regional and remote areas, access to high-quality literacy and creative education can be limited. Through our Young Writers and Young Illustrators Programs, The Literature Centre brings award-winning authors and illustrators directly to students across WA — from the city to our regions. 🛤️ It’s more than a visit. It’s a door to confidence, culture, and creativity. 🌾 Regional students say it helps them feel connected — and proud of their voice. 👣 Every community has stories that deserve to be heard. We’re actively seeking partners to help us expand this impact across more communities in 2025 and beyond. • Thinking Like Storytellers at Guildford Grammar School ✨ This term, we loved working with Year 9 students at Guildford Grammar, exploring multimodal texts — from Where the Wild Things Are to Shaun Tan’s The Arrival and Matt Dixon’s The Robots. Led by Ron Gorman, our Creative Learning Advisor, students dived into the creative process behind graphic novels: designing storyboards, selecting panels, and discovering how words and images work together to tell a story. The workshop brought classroom learning to life, reinforcing key concepts about identity, acceptance, and cultural storytelling. Inspired by authors like Shaun Tan and Art Spiegelman, students gained insight into how powerful narratives are crafted. It was inspiring to see students leave the session thinking like storytellers themselves — imagining, designing, and creating with confidence, curiosity, and excitement.

  • Inspiring Young Readers at Mount Barker Library ✨ We had such a fantastic time at the Mount Barker Library, working with students from Mount Barker Community College (Years 4–6) and Kendenup Primary School (Years 1–6). Together, we became ‘viewing detectives’, exploring characters, plots, language, and illustration — and discovering how much fun it is to read, think critically, and get creative with stories. Moments like this remind us why we do what we do: helping every young voice feel seen, inspired, and ready to explore the power of stories. Thank you to Mount Barker Library for sharing these photos!

  • “I feel like a real writer!” ✍️ That’s what students tell us after our Young Writers Program — and the numbers back it up: 📈 93% of students reported feeling more confident expressing themselves 📖 89% of teachers observed increased engagement and improved literacy outcomes 💬 Students said they felt “seen,” “inspired,” and “more like a real writer.” It’s more than stats. It’s about unlocking creativity, confidence, and critical thinking skills in every young person. Across Western Australia, especially in regional, outer metro and low-ICSEA schools, we’re helping every young voice thrive. Let’s invest in young voices — and futures — one story at a time. 👉 Learn more about our program and how you can support it. https://lnkd.in/gwhP4dFt #YoungWritersProgram #LiteracyMatters #YouthEmpowerment #CreativityInSchools #EducationForAll #SupportingYoungVoices

  • Stories spark ideas. Ideas ignite change. ✨ Thank you to all the educators, authors, and literacy leaders who joined us for the Celebrate Reading Conference 2025. This year’s conference was more than an event—it was a living, breathing conversation about the power of stories. Together, we explored how creativity and storytelling can transform learning and powerful reminders of why stories matter—not just as lessons, but as pathways to imagination, empathy, and connection. We extend our heartfelt thanks to The Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport (CITS) and the Copyright Agency, whose support allows these conversations to grow, connect, and continue—empowering teachers, librarians, and young readers across WA.

  • Today, we celebrate the stories that carry culture, knowledge, and connection across generations. First Nations storytelling is a powerful thread, linking past, present, and future, and a reminder of the strength and resilience of communities across Australia. This year’s theme, Strength in Our Stories: For Now & Future Generations, highlights how storytelling sustains culture, empowers young people, and preserves languages. We honour the first storytellers—the custodians of this wisdom—whose creativity and knowledge continue to inspire us all. We also acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands where we live and work, and recognise that sovereignty has never been ceded. At The Literature Centre, we celebrate the power of First Nations storytelling and invite everyone to explore, respect, and be inspired by these stories today and for generations to come.
