VICSES state and regional command staff gathered earlier this week to build knowledge and practise skills in managing control agency hazards, as part of the organisation’s commitment to keeping Victorians safe and better supporting our volunteers' response during real life incidents. The 2025 Landslide Masterclass allowed staff to gain vital experience coordinating and effecting a comprehensive emergency response to a landslide incident, engaging with key industry stakeholders and simulating real scenarios throughout. More than 60 additional staff will attend the same event in September to ensure VICSES offices located across Victoria are well-prepared to act swiftly in support of our volunteers on the ground in the event of a landslide emergency. A brilliant initiative which provides real benefits to communities across the state. 🧡

Last night, SBS and Australian Red Cross launched a new online training program to help organisations understand, identify and respond to modern slavery. Affecting over 50 million people globally, modern slavery is a hidden crime and serious humanitarian issue that impacts an estimated 41,000 people in Australia. With many cases going undetected, increasing awareness through training becomes critical. Thank you to everyone who attended last night’s program launch, which featured a panel discussion with leading experts Dr James Cockayne, NSW Anti-slavery Commissioner; Sarah Schricker, Co-founder and Executive Director of Survivor Connections; Laura McManus, Director, Strategy & Business Engagement of Anti-Slavery Commissioner’s Office; Josh O’ Connor, Detective Inspector at Australian Federal Police and Natalie Maxwell-Davis, Senior Manager of Modern Slavery Prevention & Response Australian Red Cross. Strong partnerships create stronger outcomes. The Commission has released the First Nations Partnership Playbook, a practical guide to help public servants build enduring, respectful partnerships with First Nations peoples, communities and organisations. Trust Building Strategies for Safer Communities 🌏 The IACP was honored to welcome Assistant Commissioner Virginia Nelson from the Queensland, Australia Police Service to IACP Headquarters to discuss IACP’s Trust Building Campaign Toolkit and how our trust-building resources can strengthen community relationships back home in Australia. Key elements of community trust such as leadership, integrity, transparency, cultural competency, and collective healing from historical trauma were discussed. Her visit reflects a global commitment to law enforcement culture rooted in trust, procedural justice, and proactive leadership. Australian Red Cross and Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia have launched a new online training program to help organisations understand, identify, and respond to modern slavery. Designed with input from experts and practitioners including people with lived experience, this training supports organisations to meet their Modern Slavery obligations and take meaningful action. Modern Slavery is a hidden crime and a serious humanitarian issue. The Global Slavery Index estimates that approximately 50 million people worldwide live in conditions of modern slavery, including more than 41,000 here in Australia. Limited awareness has long been a barrier to change. This new course offers practical insights and strategies to help individuals and organisations prevent, identify and address Modern Slavery in all its forms.
