Iluka is building Australia’s first fully-integrated rare earths refinery, scheduled for commissioning in 2027. Iluka’s rare earths refinery in Australia will achieve an independent supply of rare earths, producing separated light and heavy rare earth oxides. The refinery will feature a separation capacity of 5,500tpa of NdPr oxide and up to 750tpa of Dy/Tb oxide. Political, tech and energy leaders met yesterday at The Australian Energy Nation Forum discussing the role of nuclear power in Australia's future. Former Obama Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz and NEXTDC boss Craig Scroggie both told the forum that Australia should consider nuclear as part of its energy and decarbonisation plans. South Australian Labor Premier Peter Malinauskas said "We don’t achieve net zero globally and the timelines that we want without nuclear energy playing a far bigger role. That’s just the truth of it, which is why I support its expansion,”. WA’s electricity system is under pressure and the need for firming capacity has never been clearer. In just five weeks, WA has set four new winter peak demand records, driven by population growth, electrification of heating, and a bitterly cold winter (by Perth standards). On Monday, Perth recorded its coldest day in 50 years, along with the second-highest winter power demand ever. As solar and wind output dropped, wholesale electricity prices surged to nearly $900/MWh - in the middle of the day. The summer demand forecast is 11% higher than winter, and volatility is only rising.   This is a clear signal that we need dispatchable, reliable capacity that can step in when renewables can’t, which is exactly what Strike’s integrated gas-to-power model provides. By fuelling our power generation with our own low-cost gas, we: ✅ Avoid contributing to gas market crunches when power prices soar ✅ Provide dispatchable capacity that stabilises the system and supports renewables ✅ Realise the upside of these high electricity prices The investment case for firming electricity has never been stronger. With our South Erregulla Peaking Power Station on track to be online in October 2026 Strike is positioned to be a significant enabler of WA’s energy transition while capturing strong returns for our shareholders. UOW has received a $650,000 grant from the NSW Government to lead critical research into hydrogen pipeline safety. UOW is the only institution in Australia, and one of just five globally, with the capability to conduct this type of testing and the research has the potential to transform safe hydrogen transportation around the world. “This project sits at the intersection of our Industry Policy and Innovation Blueprint, reflecting the importance of investing in scientific research to help solve the challenges shaping the future of some of our biggest industries," said Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology Anoulack Chanthivong. “The University of Wollongong has produced nation-leading and globally recognised work on hydrogen in the past and the NSW Government is excited to see UOW, in partnership with industry, pave the way for a more sustainable and innovative future.” To be delivered over two years, the research will zero-in on the leading cause of hydrogen pipeline failures and develop risk assessment and design tools to address them. #UOWResearch
