Airtree has officially closed its fifth fund at $650 million, with more than half the capital coming from global institutional investors. Despite the impressive number by Australian standards, partner James Cameron says the figure represents a deliberate decision to maintain fund size discipline rather than chase a mega-fund. "Fund size inflation can be the enemy of returns in venture and all of the big LPs internationally are very attuned to that," he told Capital Brief. Some of the previously identified backers of the fund include Harvard Management Company, the University of Wisconsin, and Chicago-based private equity firm Adams Street Partners. Global credit spreads have fallen to record lows – levels not seen since the late 1990s. Is this a warning sign, and what does this mean for investors searching for yield? In an interview with ausbiz’s Andrew Geoghegan our Head of Global Credit Solutions Frank Danieli highlights a key driver behind such tight spreads: the rise of passive investment vehicles indiscriminately buying fixed income, compressing spreads while offering limited compensation for risk. Frank also explains why private credit can provide a genuine alternative to traditional fixed income, with the potential for stronger risk-adjusted returns thanks to higher security and more defensive positioning versus unsecured bonds. As always, he emphasises the critical point that not all private credit managers are created equal. Investors must ask the right questions: Does the manager have proprietary origination capabilities? Do they have the expertise to actively manage diversified credit portfolios? Do they have the skills and experience to manage downside risk? Toorak CEO John Beacham recently spoke with Private Debt Investor about the growing residential transition loan (RTL) market:   “RTLs are needed in the US because of the national housing shortage, as well as the ageing and obsolescence of existing housing stock.
