Macquarie Capital is pleased to have advised Telstra on entering into a strategic partnership with Infosys through Telstra’s divestment of a 75% stake in Versent Group. The transaction will enable Telstra and Infosys to refer and leverage each other’s offerings and furthers Telstra’s ‘Connected Future 30’ strategy of focusing on core connectivity. Completion of the transaction is subject to regulatory approvals, employee consultation and other conditions.

We have advised Vocus and its shareholders, Macquarie Asset Management and Aware Super, on their successful $5.25 billion acquisition of TPG Telecom’s Enterprise, Government and Wholesale fixed business and associated fibre network infrastructure assets. BHP just dealt a blow to the junior copper sector. At a recent shareholder briefing, CEO Mike Henry outlined the company’s copper ambitions. He said, “The copper growth story for BHP is one of the big stories. We have made so much progress. We now have four big copper growth basins on top of the 28% copper growth that we have seen in recent years.” But rather than chase more acquisitions, BHP is doubling down on its existing pipeline. That includes the massive Vicuna district in Argentina, a 50/50 venture with Lundin targeting production in 2030, and the long-delayed Resolution project in Arizona, discovered in 1995 and still tied up in regulatory battles with partner Rio Tinto. If these projects move forward, BHP would hold interests in four of the world’s ten largest copper mines. That is enough copper for BHP. For everyone else, it means one less major in the hunt for new reserves. It is not a death blow for juniors, but copper prices will have to do a lot more heavy lifting to get their attention.

Airtree has officially closed its fifth fund at $650 million, with more than half the capital coming from global institutional investors. Despite the impressive number by Australian standards, partner James Cameron says the figure represents a deliberate decision to maintain fund size discipline rather than chase a mega-fund. "Fund size inflation can be the enemy of returns in venture and all of the big LPs internationally are very attuned to that," he told Capital Brief. Some of the previously identified backers of the fund include Harvard Management Company, the University of Wisconsin, and Chicago-based private equity firm Adams Street Partners.
