Cobra Strikes as Navy Modernises Satellite Systems 🐍🛰️ The Royal Australian Navy has launched a project to replace its satellite communications, with the upgrade of HMAS Sydney’s SATCOM capability. The ship’s existing Maritime Advanced SATCOM Terrestrial Infrastructure System (MASTIS), first introduced fleet-wide in the early 2000s, is being replaced by the advanced King Cobra system. After 25 years of service, MASTIS will be fully phased out in favour of the King Cobra and Cobra systems, selected as the Navy’s primary and alternate SATCOM systems. Both were chosen for their enhanced performance and are designed to operate on the Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) constellations. 🚀 Q3 Highlights from Leidos Australia: People, Partnerships & Innovation This quarter, we delivered major milestones that strengthen Australia’s defence capability: ✅ Delivering Counter-Drone Capability (Project LAND 156) - we were selected as the ADF’s systems integration partner for its counter-drone program. ✅ Working with Telstra on My Health Record data - we are partnering with Telstra Health to equip the health sector with a secure data exchange platform that will deliver better health outcomes for Australians. ✅ Introducing Sea Archer - we started the local build of an uncrewed surface vessel (USV), providing exceptional performance and payload features in a small, affordable package. ✅ Sustaining Air Command & Control (AC-C2CS) - we were chosen to sustain Defence's mission-critical suite of software that supports air operations planning, execution, intelligence, and situational awareness. ✅ Launching Nationally Recognised Aircrew Qualifications - in an Australian industry first, we introduced Certificates III and IV in Airborne Operations, advancing professional standards for non-pilot aviation professionals in critical missions like search-and-rescue, medevac, law enforcement, and border protection. ✅ Managing ICT Services for Geoscience Australia - we were selected to support Geoscience Australia's transformation and delivery of trusted Earth science data and public safety information for government, industry, and the community. Hendon-based Acacia Systems is set to play a key role in advancing counter-drone tech for the ADF as part of the $45.9 million LAND 156 program being led by Leidos Australia. As a long-term partner of Leidos, Acacia will deliver its flagship Australian-made Cortex Mission Management System to support the development of a progressive, agile minimum viable counter-drone capability, targeted for demonstration by December this year. 🇦🇺🛡️🛸 Australia has awarded DroneShield a $3.28 million contract to supply portable counter-drone systems to the Australian Defence Force. Company Chief Executive Oleg Vornik welcomed the opportunity and said, “This contract reflects the growing operational need for portable counter-drone capabilities and DroneShield’s continued role in delivering solutions aligned with Defence requirements.” Other suppliers supporting Project LAND 156 include Axon Public Safety Australia, CACI International Inc, EPE, HIFraser, HighCom Technology, and KeyOptions. Pioneer Computers Australia Dream Industrial, Precision Technic Defence Group, Southtech Systems, and SteelRock Technologies also add to the list.

Defence and industry partner L3Harris Integrated Mission Systems Australia have signed a collaborative research agreement supporting the development of underwater acoustic communication and sensing systems. This agreement builds on testing at Maritime Big Play (http://spr.ly/6041A6vjJ) during Exercise Talisman Sabre, where Australia and partner nations demonstrated their ability to communicate with underwater autonomous systems. Undersea warfare capabilities are set to play an increasingly important role in safeguarding our national security — but communicating under water remains one of the toughest technical challenges in the maritime domain. This collaboration between DSTG and L3Harris Technologies will help accelerate delivery of systems enabling the Royal Australian Navy to detect threats and maintain awareness below the surface.
