Defying the storm-clouds outside, I've been talking today with Julie Hare about how higher education improves Australia’s productivity.   Our sector is also one of the biggest contributors to Australia's growth and greater social good and the numbers tell the story:   Universities contribute $41 billion annually to Australia’s GDP and support over 260,000 full-time jobs.   With just 0.3 percent of the population, our universities produce 3 percent of the world’s research outputs. We have 8 universities in the top 100 globally.   Industry studies consistently show that every $1 invested in Australian R&D yields an estimated $3.50 in economic return.   92% of Australians see universities as critical to our nation’s future - not just delivering world-class research and education - but also training thousands of teachers, nurses, engineers, scientists, and other qualified professionals our workforce needs.   Australian universities are extraordinary and internationally punching above their weight in terms of attracting the best partnerships, researchers and students from around the world. At the same time, we are grappling with record levels of complexity - with over 300 legislative and regulatory instruments from state and federal governments that we must comply with. That list shouldn't keep growing. For every new regulatory demand, we need to ask: what is now unnecessary, out-of-date, or redundant? As the Productivity Summit addresses regulation this week, our sector is a case study. We need regulation fit-for-purpose - to ensure we can prioritise resourcing excellent teaching, brilliant research, and improving the quality of life for all Australians. It's why I've enjoyed the conversations today about reforming our sector —and how universities like the University of Sydney can help drive national productivity further.

AI will massively boost Australian productivity? In short: doing AI well is hard work, *sorting out your data so AI works* is hard work, and we shouldn't underestimate what it's going to take at every level of an organisation to really benefit.
