A year is a long time in AI... who else is amazed at the developments we are all seeing around us on this front? The 2025 Customer Owned Banking Association convention in Brisbane kicked off yesterday with a thought provoking (harrowing?) governance session for Directors and CEOs including content from Tim Trumper, author of AI: Game On: How to Decide Who – or What – Decides and followed by a panel conversation with Chairs Andrew Kearnan GAICD, MBA, Sam Martin-Williams FAICD FGIA CMILT, Simon Terry and Elizabeth Crouch AM FAICD on the theme of Technology, Trust and Modern Governance. I'm buying Tim's book to take home.. stay tuned for a future review! Meantime, what were my key takeaways for decision makers? - Modern governance is a team sport - involve all the Board members and key execs in prioritising purpose-led AI innovations to optimise return on investment. - Strategy intersecting with innovation: Tim illustrated when to leverage AI for efficiency and enhanced member experiences—and when human oversight remains essential. Standard Chartered CEO Bill Winters is standing out in the global banking sector by maintaining a flexible, hybrid work policy and resisting the rigid office mandates now sweeping through much of Wall Street. As peers from companies like JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs urge staff back to traditional office rhythms, Winters has doubled down on a philosophy of employee autonomy and trust, placing his bank in sharp contrast to its U.S. and U.K. peers. In a recent interview with Bloomberg Television, Winters was unequivocal: “We work with adults, and the adults can have an adult conversation with other adults and decide how they’re going to best manage their team.” He emphasized that the approach is “working for us,” adding, “How other companies make that work? Everybody’s got their own recipe.” For Standard Chartered, that recipe is rooted in flexibility, allowing teams and managers to agree on in-office schedules that fit their business needs and personal lives. Project Acacia has reached a significant milestone with a number of industry participants selected to explore how innovations in digital money and existing settlement infrastructure might support the development of Australian wholesale tokenised asset markets. Project Acacia is a joint initiative between the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Digital Finance CRC. This work is also supported by ASIC, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority and Commonwealth Treasury. 24 innovative use cases from a diverse range of organisations, ranging from local fintechs to major banks, have been conditionally selected for this next stage of the project. There will be: - 19 pilot use cases, which will involve real money and real asset transactions, and - 5 proof-of-concept use cases involving simulated transactions. The use cases involve a range of asset classes, including fixed income, private markets, trade receivables and carbon credits. Should employer KiwiSaver contributions continue for over-65s who are still working? Nigel Jackson, Chief Executive of Westpac's KiwiSaver scheme, BT Funds Management, says: “Over the past three years, 54% of our KiwiSaver customers aged 65 and over have continued to make contributions to their accounts – but just one-third of this age group have received employer contributions in that time. “It seems only fair that workers over 65 should get the same benefits as their younger colleagues. And continuing employer contributions would boost people’s KiwiSaver balances in those critical last years of working.” Westpac NZ is among those employers who make KiwiSaver contributions for all employees who are contributing, regardless of age. Australia is on track to become more tightly regulated than the UK and Europe - and a lot less competitive. https://lnkd.in/g9Kcssw3 The proposed changes to interchange fees risk cutting off access to credit, weakening competition, and stalling progress. Consumers and small business could be hit hardest, facing less access and fewer options for credit, higher costs, and less support from the local players driving security and innovation in payments.
