In medicine, they’ve delivered some of the most transformative breakthroughs in recent years. Even the now-mainstream GLP-1 medications are a form of peptide therapy. “Do what others won’t so you can live like others can’t.” That’s the start up founders mantra right? It’s a mantra I resonate far more with than constantly talk of balance. Most get it wrong though. They imagine it to mean sacrifice time, relationships and health while hustling, having a finger in every pie and saying yes to every opportunity. The thing is, that’s all REALLY easy. Others WILL do that. In fact most ambitious people do that. I’ve worked with millionaires, multi-millionaires, founders of some incredibly successful businesses and exists. Enough to know that what other won’t do is very different, others won’t: Create firm boundaries around what they will and won’t do to allow themselves to live in high performance mode and support the business to do the same. Have an honest and ongoing conversation with their (life) partner and define where they are going, the type of relationship they want to have and the type of parents they want to be. Create clarity, direction, focus and strategy for the business, each business area and each individual in the business to allow this business to drive forward as one. Have an ongoing process of exposing and learning from failure. Face uncomfortable conversations, prioritise and stick to it, defining what they expect of themselves and do what they said they would do. There is much more besides but it all comes back to this, most people won’t and don’t create their own philosophy, principles and practises that they test in the world and constantly refine in a way that allows them to create life they love and a future they desire. That’s what it means to do what others won’t so that you can live like others can’t.

According to the Royal Australian College of GPs, more than 70% of doctors now list mental health as the primary reason people are coming through their doors. That’s a 10% jump since 2017. The stats don’t lie. If there’s this much strain in the system, it’s inevitably showing up in the office. And that has consequences for every Australian company. Why? Because mental health impacts business on three levels: 👉 Legally – Employers now carry a duty of care to prevent and not aggravate psychological injury. Failing to do so can result in serious liability. 👉 Economically – Burnout, absenteeism, workers comp claims, HR caseloads, and turnover of top talent are expensive. Investing upfront is far cheaper than the cost of doing nothing. 👉 Ethically – Beyond compliance and profit, it’s the right thing to do. Workplaces have a responsibility to ensure people feel safe, supported, and human. So how do companies prepare for this reality? A few proven tactics: 1️⃣ Train managers – Equip leaders with the skills to have hard conversations and support employees with confidence. 2️⃣ Conduct psychosocial risk assessments – Proactively identify hazards and protect the business from liability. 3️⃣ Build peer support networks – Create trusted pathways for employees to seek help from colleagues. 4️⃣ Foster a speak-up culture – Role-model vulnerability, share stories, and normalise openness from the top down. 5️⃣ Rethink EAP – Move beyond call centres to providers that embed into the business and deliver genuine wellbeing outcomes. The mental health wave is here. The question is whether your workplace is ready to face it – or whether it’s hoping it will pass by. It won’t. The companies that lead in psychological safety will not only protect their people but also gain the edge in resilience, performance, and trust.

There’s a lot of talk about social media these days but not a lot of solutions. So I was excited to learn that TikTok is partnering with youth and teens to get feedback as to how to make the app feel more safe for mental health and well being and is using this research to improve settings. We also learned about ways that creators can engage with the platform to safely interact with their communities and features that allows more connections with communities while limiting access from people who bring in negative energy. Creator Care mode a new feature was rolled out and creators are already saying great things about the features. TikTok is also working with experts to make sure that mísinformation online is limited and rolled out their footnotes features which allows for more fact checking and citing reputable resources. I loved working with the Trust and Safety team at TikTok because they partner with families, experts and community organizations for Good. Make sure you check out these new features!
