The Mandala Report: Unlocking Australia's R&D Potential proves something we've always known at Atlassian - that large successful innovators benefit the whole technology ecosystem and the broader economy when they're investing in research and development. If we want local start-ups to scale from Australia, they need access to talent and expertise who know how to do that. More than 140 ex-Atlassians have founded their own companies and many more have taken what they learned at Atlassian to help other local tech companies scale. When you broaden that phenomenon out to the top 5% of R&D Tax Incentive claimants - they've helped develop 1800 company founders or CEOs employing 132,000 Australians and generating $77 billion in economic benefit. If we want that multiplier effect to continue, we need to encourage large innovative firms to invest more in Australia. That's what the right policy settings will deliver. We can see the underinvestment in R&D, and that Australia is lagging well behind its global peers, so we need to do more to reach the full potential. Shift the dial and the pay off is huge - significant economy-wide productivity gains, $5 in economic benefit for every $1 of additional government investment. That investment pays the government back in additional revenue within 10 years. Greater investment in R&D will support a more economically diverse and resilient Australian economy. We can't have a Future Made in Australia without a Future Invented in Australia. NZ Tech Hiring – July 2025 A quick pulse check for anyone recruiting in the current climate. 📉 Perm hiring remains slow across a lot of the tech space — particularly mid-senior delivery, engineering and leadership roles. Most businesses are being cautious, prioritising BAU over transformation unless it's tied to revenue, risk or compliance. 🛠️ Contracting is ticking along, especially in areas like cloud, cyber, data, and large regulatory programmes. We're seeing demand for flexible resources, often scoped to shorter terms. 📊 The good news? There’s solid talent on the market. Some high-calibre PMs, developers, BAs and architects are open to work following restructures and programme wrap-ups. These aren’t the “active candidates” from job boards — these are proven operators who are open to the right opportunity. 🎯 But that’s the catch: they’re being selective. People are looking for clarity — hybrid expectations, meaningful work, and engaged leadership. The days of vague briefs and unclear pipelines won’t cut it. 🔍 From a recruiter’s view, the market is: Candidate-rich but opportunity-lean Fast-moving in contracting Quietly competitive for top-tier talent If you're hiring and not seeing results, it may be time to reassess how the role is positioned, or how you're approaching the market. Deloitte has been caught blatantly using AI to generate reports for commissioned consulting projects and will now repay the Albanese government after using AI in a $440,000 report, a fact uncovered by a professor on the government committee.It’s not about one firm or one government. Governments across the world should be cautious about blindly trusting consultants who are often not subject-matter experts, but rather glorified salespeople.

Chris Crozier (GAICD), the top tech guy for the Department of Defence, has described market-leading global platforms as offering the right architecture for the kind of digital resilience the federal government needs. Joining a panel to discuss how to build the foundations for a future-ready government, Defence’s chief information officer told an audience of public sector IT and data leaders that choosing so-called “best-in-class” technology platforms would attract the best talent. “Underpinning that we need best-in-class sovereign capability as well, and a number of the [private sector representatives here] today are part of our sovereign ecosystem,” Crozier told an audience in Canberra. 🚨 AI isn’t always right — and Deloitte just learnt the hard way. A report they delivered to government, written partly with generative AI, ended up with fake quotes, wrong sources, and even made-up research. They had to go back, fix it, and pay money back. 👉 Lesson: AI can hallucinate. Without proper human oversight, trust and credibility disappear — whether in Pretoria, Cape Town, or Joburg.
