The Greenbank Battery is CS Energy's second large-scale battery and came online earlier this year. It is comprised of 108 Tesla Megapack 2XL units, each paired with its own inverter, wiring, and heat management system; with a capacity of 200 MW/400MWh, it stores enough energy to power up to 66,000 homes for up to two hours in the peak demand period. Political, tech and energy leaders met yesterday at The Australian Energy Nation Forum discussing the role of nuclear power in Australia's future. Former Obama Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz and NEXTDC boss Craig Scroggie both told the forum that Australia should consider nuclear as part of its energy and decarbonisation plans. South Australian Labor Premier Peter Malinauskas said "We don’t achieve net zero globally and the timelines that we want without nuclear energy playing a far bigger role. That’s just the truth of it, which is why I support its expansion,”. UOW has received a $650,000 grant from the NSW Government to lead critical research into hydrogen pipeline safety. UOW is the only institution in Australia, and one of just five globally, with the capability to conduct this type of testing and the research has the potential to transform safe hydrogen transportation around the world. “This project sits at the intersection of our Industry Policy and Innovation Blueprint, reflecting the importance of investing in scientific research to help solve the challenges shaping the future of some of our biggest industries," said Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology Anoulack Chanthivong. “The University of Wollongong has produced nation-leading and globally recognised work on hydrogen in the past and the NSW Government is excited to see UOW, in partnership with industry, pave the way for a more sustainable and innovative future.” To be delivered over two years, the research will zero-in on the leading cause of hydrogen pipeline failures and develop risk assessment and design tools to address them. #UOWResearch

As the Reliability Panel undertakes an intensive work program, including the Review of the System Restart Standard and the recently commenced Reliability Standard and Settings Review the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) has announced the reappointment of Ms Rachele Williams as the Consumer and Distributed Energy Resources (CER and DER) representative to the Reliability Panel. Ms Williams, currently a Director at the Plenary Group, has over 25 years of experience as a power system engineer and a distinguished track record in Australia’s energy sector.  Reliability Panel Chair Rainer Korte said Ms Williams brings invaluable expertise in distributed energy resources at a critical time for Australia's energy transition. “Ms Williams’ reappointment provides essential continuity as the Panel undertakes significant work to ensure our electricity system remains reliable and secure for all consumers," Mr Korte said. AEMC Final Determination: Efficient Procurement of Inertia Although the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) has decided not to implement a co-optimised inertia market, we support the Reliability Panel monitoring inertia conditions on an annual basis, which should preserve future procurement opportunities.   Over the last few years, we’ve put a lot of effort advocating for essential system service (ESS) frameworks which attract the right mix of technologies, backed by robust strategy, governance, market signals and transparent procurement. Getting this right is fundamental to our energy transition and lowering costs for our customers.   Synchronous condensers have a place in managing system security risks and more must be done to develop our understanding and acceptance of other technology options, such as grid forming battery energy storage systems. The Australian Energy Market Operator's (AEMO) Transitional Plan must deliver a long-term ESS requirements statement and facilitate trials of innovative technologies. The AEMC and Australian Energy Regulator (AER) should review the RIT-T to address its inflexibilities, including establishing a standardised method for valuing ESS and improving transparency. The energy transition demands technology-agnostic, evidence-based approaches to system security.

The second round of Hydrogen Headstart is now open for expressions of interest, with up to $2 billion in funding to support the development of large-scale renewable hydrogen projects across Australia. ARENA’s Hydrogen Headstart program aims to unlock innovation and new supply chains critical to the global energy transition. Building on lessons from the first round, Round 2 has a renewed focus on high priority use cases and projects that can drive down the cost of renewable hydrogen production in the long-term. ‘Getting renewable hydrogen to commercial scale will take time, innovation and ongoing support.
