I missed this publication initially - but my chapter of regulatory design strategies for generative AI is now 'out'. The chapter does not debate whether we should regulate generate AI specifically or generally. It considers the approaches we might take to do so ... key take aways are the design of law matters and so do considerations of clarity, coherence and enforcement. We’ve signed a Memorandum of Understanding with K-Bio Lab Hub, South Korea’s flagship biotech incubator, to establish a Melbourne launchpad within the Monash Technology Precinct. From 2025, the launchpad will support Korean biotech startups, with ambitions to grow to 30 companies by 2027. These ventures will focus on therapeutics nearing clinical trials and early-stage drug discovery, building new opportunities for joint research, clinical translation and commercialisation. 🚀 Strengthening New Zealand’s research to industry connections I’m pleased to announce that the Government is providing an additional $1 million per year to support the New Zealand Product Accelerator. The NZ Product Accelerator plays a vital role in growing our advanced manufacturing sector by directly connecting New Zealand firms with leading scientists, engineers, and innovators. Unlike traditional research models, the NZ Product Accelerator operates on an “industry pull” approach, enabling businesses to bring their real-world challenges to researchers and accelerate product development, while reducing the risks of investing in new technologies. Since its establishment in 2009, the NZPA has delivered impressive results. A 2023 review found its work generates an estimated $76–$468 million in annual economic impact. The review also confirmed that the NZPA fills a critical gap by helping connect research and industry so that innovation can thrive. Currently administered by Callaghan Innovation in partnership with the University of Auckland, the NZ Product Accelerator will soon transition to the New Zealand Institute for Advanced Technology. This additional investment ensures the programme can continue delivering on its core mission - supporting firms, building capability, and driving the adoption of advanced technologies across our economy. This uplift in funding recognises the proven impact of the NZ Product Accelerator and strengthens its role as a bridge between research and industry, helping New Zealand turn great ideas into world-leading products. 👉 With initiatives like this, we’re backing innovation, supporting industry, and building a stronger, future-focused economy for all New Zealanders.

Peter Mac and Monash University scientists have, for the first time, filmed how key proteins in the “Hippo pathway” move and bind to DNA in real time, offering new insights into how this ancient signalling system controls cell growth, repair, and death — and how its disruption contributes to cancers like mesothelioma. Led by Professor Kieran Harvey and Dr Benjamin Kroeger, the study reveals how TEAD and YAP proteins regulate which genes cells produce. Two drugs targeting this pathway are already in first-in-human trials at Peter Mac, raising hopes for new treatments for mesothelioma and other hard-to-treat cancers. 🔑 National PID strategies are key to driving ORCID adoption around the world. 🚀 Coming soon: a new funding opportunity in quantum communication research.   We’re excited to announce that the 2025 round of the Catalyst Strategic NZ–Korea Joint Research Partnerships programme will focus on quantum communication - a rapidly advancing field with transformative potential for secure data and future technologies.   This triennial programme supports bilateral research collaborations, and in 2025 will fund three joint projects.
