We are proud to have had Ashwant Singh attend the European Symposium of Fire Safety Science (ESFSS) and present his master's thesis.
Early last month, I had the privilege of presenting part of my master's thesis at the European Symposium of Fire Safety Science (ESFSS). And what an amazing experience it was. My first conference infront of such a prestigious crowd and in one of the most beautiful buildings I've seen. The entire event was unforgettable and with an amazing level of organisation. Thank you so much to the ZAG - Zavod za gradbeništvo Slovenije team for putting on a show. One of the biggest highlights of the conference was being exposed to a range of other young engineers and research, all of which are doing amazing things and pushing the bounds of fire engineering. The ability to assist each other productively is what makes events like this so important and thank you to everyone I had the pleasure of meeting. I presented my paper titled 'Towards the development of a heat dose-based ignition framework for performance-based design'. Ignition of materials is a complex, probabilistic phenomena, but an important one for fire engineering assessments. The problem takes on another layer when you consider slow growing and dynamic wildland fires, which formed the intent of the dose-based framework. By utilising well established ignition criteria, we were able to present a heat dose criterion that engineers can use in their assessments when the critical heat flux approach may be too conservative. This work is not mine alone to celebrate. A special thank you to my coauthors Pascale Vacca, Elsa Pastor and Nathan White. Also, a special thank you to everyone else who made this happen, including the team at UPC Centre d'Estudis del Risc Tecnològic (CERTEC), IMFSE and CSIRO Infrastructure Technologies. Stay tuned for some more wild and wacky bushfire research...

Our very own Ashwant Singh will be presenting at next week's (3-5 September) #ESFSS25 conference in Slovenia! If you are attending please say hello!
Excited to share that im presenting at the ESFSS conference next week in Slovenia! I'll be presenting part of my master's thesis work, revolving around how a dose-based ignition framework can be used in particular fire assessment scenarios. The framework is most applicable for WUI assessments or large open volume buildings. The work is a collaborative effort between the CSIRO Infrastructure Technologies team and the Centre d'Estudis del Risc Tecnològic (CERTEC) at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. For anyone interested in the work we do at CSIRO (Australias National Science Agency), don't hesitate to contact me at the conference or over LinkedIn. We're always up to collaborate and solve the greatest challenges through innovative science and technology. Im incredibly grateful for all those involved in making this happen. A special thank you to my co-authors Nathan White, Elsa Pastor and Pascale Vacca. Also extending my thanks to the CSIRO bushfire team, notably justin leonard and Raphaele Blanchi. Couldn't have don't this without you. See you all soon!

With #NationalScienceWeek starting tomorrow, we are calling all citizen scientist and those with a curious mind to join CSIRO's national science experiment, called CSIRO Wild Watch! You can register here. https://lnkd.in/gbP_Hr5K
One of the best things we can do as scientists is involve the community directly in our research. It can give us information and insights that we can’t gather alone, through data that is richer, deeper and more detailed, and ultimately of greater benefit. I’m thrilled to share that CSIRO is launching a national science experiment, called CSIRO Wild Watch - designed for younger Australians, but open to all - to be held during National Science Week (9–17 August). This will be a nationwide adventure in citizen science. We’re asking people to observe their natural world and contribute real data to the nation’s biodiversity database, the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA). This is an important tool for CSIRO researchers, who use it to track every species from sharks and snails, to wattle, and beyond. It’s also used by many researchers outside CSIRO, as well as government, land managers, communities and schools. I urge you to get involved and bring the youngest people in your life along, it’s a particularly great project for teachers. Your observations will fuel critical biodiversity research and conservation efforts. You can register here. https://lnkd.in/gAnqinPz

Last week, CSIRO Infrastructure Technologies had the opportunity to attend and speak at both National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia's Accreditation Matter's Conference #AM2025 in Sydney and National Fire Industry Association of Australia's first ever National Technical Forum in the Gold Coast. 🔍 At #AM2025, discussions focused on why accreditation matters and how conformity assessments support Australia's economy. Key takeaways included: 1. The role of the Australia's Technical Infrastructure Alliance - National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia, National Measurement Institute, Australia, Standards Australia. 2. The importance of building trust and enabling trade through accredited systems. 3. The growing relevance of digital traceability in ensuring transparency and resilience across industries. 🔥 At the National Technical Forum, attention turned to the challenges facing the fire protection industry and upcoming changes to the #ActivFire® Scheme, which certifies active fire protection equipment like smoke detectors and suppression systems. These updates aim to improve product conformity, compliance, and innovation across the sector. It was a week of collaboration, insight, and forward-thinking. If you attended either event, what stood out most to you? #activfire #NATA #standardsaustralia #accrditationmatters #nmi #nfia #conformityassessment #teamcsiro #csiro
