While many sectors of society have remained steady or even improved their ethics scores, social media stands out as one of the most negatively viewed areas. The media sector overall sits in negative territory in 2025, and social media platforms continue to attract strong criticism. TikTok is overall seen as the least ethical platform, with Facebook and Twitter also viewed negatively. #Telstra fined $18 million for misleading Belong customers over broadband speed claims Telstra has been ordered by the Federal Court to pay a penalty of $18 million for breaching the Australian Consumer Law after it moved almost 9,000 Belong customers to a lower speed plan without telling them. In October and November 2020, Telstra migrated 8,897 customers on its Belong brand NBN plans from their current plan which provided a maximum upload speed of 40 Mbps to a service that provided a maximum upload speed of only 20 Mbps. The download speed was unchanged at 100Mbps. ASIC proposes extending #stablecoin distribution exemption ASIC is proposing to extend class relief for intermediaries engaging in the secondary distribution of a second stablecoin issued by an Australian financial services (licenced) issuer. The instrument would amend ASIC Corporations (Stablecoin Distribution Exemption) Instrument 2025/631 to add a second named stablecoin, and make some minor consequential and clarification changes. Channel 7 breaches classification rules with fishing program The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has found Channel Seven Sydney Pty Limited breached classification rules during the broadcast of a fishing show that included highly inappropriate comments about domestic violence. The ACMA investigation found that the comments, made during an episode of Step Outside with Paul Burt broadcast on 7mate in March 2025, breached the Commercial Television Industry Code of Practice classification rules for ‘PG’ content, which require themes of domestic conflict to be handled with care. #MartySheargold Show breaches decency rules The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has found four broadcast licensees in breach of decency rules due to comments broadcast on the Marty Sheargold Show about women’s sport. The ACMA investigation found that Triple M Sydney Pty Ltd, Triple M Brisbane Pty Ltd, Gold Coast FM Pty Ltd and Maryborough Broadcasting Company Pty Limited all contravened the Commercial Radio Code of Practice by allowing derogatory language and sexist themes to be broadcast on the program.
