We're very excited to announce the 2025 UNSW Pilgrim Lecture will be given by Bill Syme on Wednesday 19th November from 5.30pm to 8pm at UNSW With over 40 years of experience in flood hydraulics, Bill is best known as the developer of the globally recognised TUFLOW hydrodynamic modelling software. Bill’s career has spanned major flood and floodplain management studies across Australia and overseas, including his leadership of the award-winning Brisbane River Flood Study Hydraulic Assessment. Bill has been recognised with the 2022 FMA Allan Ezzy Flood Risk Manager of the Year Award and the honour of delivering the 2022 Henderson Oration. He continues to inspire the next generation of hydraulic modellers with his passion for education and mentoring. About us
The Water Research Centre (WRC) undertakes multidisciplinary research in water and environmental engineering. Our researchers develop tools to improve the management and sustainability of aquatic and atmospheric environments. WRC had its beginnings over 60 years ago and in that time the scope of our research and activities has broadened substantially. Today we are one of the largest centres at UNSW and we have two locations serving more than 50 staff and supporting more than 70 PhD students.

Wonderful to host a special group of researchers from Tsinghua University (Shenzhen) at UNSW Water Research Centre last week! Professor Zhenghua Zhang led the visiting group and delivered a talk on his research into novel membrane technologies. Currently Deputy Dean at the Institute of Environment and Ecology, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (Tsinghua SIGS), Prof. Zhang is a former colleague at the UNSW Water Research Centre. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow under Professor David Waite NAE FRSN FRACI FRSC and received his PhD from UNSW (Supervisors: Professor David Waite NAE FRSN FRACI FRSC and Prof. Greg Leslie). Prof. Zhang currently leads a research team at Tsinghua SIGS specialising in membrane- and nanotechnology-enabled water treatment technologies. Welcome back and all the best to Prof. Zhang and his research team!

A warm welcome to Dr. Daniel Nebauer as a Postdoctoral Fellow at UNSW Water Research Centre! At UNSW, Daniel's research extends to the environmental fate of contaminants of emerging concern, including PFAS, pharmaceuticals, and antibiotic resistance genes, and their transformation influenced by redox conditions and microbial activity. His overarching goal is to expand the use of molecular microbial tools in the water sector and integrate them with existing engineering approaches, supporting more resilient and adaptive strategies for water quality management. Last week, Daniel presented a UNSW Water Research Centre Seminar on his research titled: "Beyond the Bloom: Microbial Ecology and Emerging Molecular Tools for Water Quality Management" Thank you and welcome to Daniel! 👏

Does human wellbeing simply equate to happiness? And what does this have to do with sustainability science? Thank you Dr. Theo Semertzidis for an insightful seminar to the UNSW Water Research Centre that rethought the idea of 'eudaimonia' or, human wellbeing, in the context of economics and economic systems. Dr. Semertzidis presented an idea of human wellbeing as one that leads to a meaningful life based on self-truth and self-responsibility, meaning to know oneself and choose who and how to be. This seminar was organised by our colleague Prof. Tommy Wiedmann as part of his research into degrowth or postgrowth sustainable futures. A degrowth future is based on a planned and democratic transformation of the economic system, which in turn aims to reduce ecological impact, along with various aspects of inequality, while improving human wellbeing.

Congratulations to Prof Vinayak Dixit and Prof Denis O'Carroll, who have been honoured for their outstanding contributions in transport and environmental remediation at the 2025 Engineers Australia Achievement Awards. 👏 UNSW Dean of Engineering Prof Julien Epps congratulated the pair, whose pioneering research has improved the lives of people and the world. “Vinayak and Denis are exceptional engineers and are highly deserving of these awards which honour Australia’s best engineers. They are leaders in their respective fields, producing ground-breaking and innovative research, teaching and working with industry to deliver tangible benefits to society. I’m proud to have them as colleagues and I’m excited to watch how their work continues to make an impact in the coming years,” he said. Congratulations to Dr. SHUANG LIU on delivering the latest UNSW Water Research Centre Seminar, titled: "Satellite remote sensing for improving the WaterNSW Integrated Water Quality Model" The method: Satellite remote sensing is increasingly being used to monitor water quality in large lakes, reservoirs and coastal waters. Due to its relatively high spatial and temporal coverage, there are great opportunities to supplement our understanding of water quality in areas where field data is limited. The need: WaterNSW is currently developing the Integrated Water Quality Model, a new tool designed to simulate water quality in Lake Burragorang, to facilitate proactive water management for Sydney’s largest water source. The solution: However, satellite remote sensing may be able to provide additional insights into the performance of the model considering the relatively sparse spatial distribution of the in situ data sources. This project, in collaboration with WaterNSW, investigates the effectiveness of satellite remote sensing to evaluate and improve the skill of WaterNSW Integrated Water Quality Model. Well done to Dr. Liu on an insightful presentation and valuable project! 👏
