Early career researchers from across #UQ’s Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and IT tackled some of the biggest challenges facing the resources sector head-on this week, as they pitched their innovative solutions to industry. As part of the Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Trailblazer program, 15 rapid-fire presentations tackled everything from mine waste valorisation and critical minerals processing to advances in safety and social performance, all with a strong focus on real impact and industry relevance. A panel of industry leaders from BHP, Critical Minerals Group Ltd, IMDEX, and UQ School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering provided rapid, insightful feedback, asking, does the project address a genuine industry need, and could it scale with the right partner? Judging by the energy in the room, the answer for many was yes 💫 This event marked the final stage of #UQ’s RTCM Trailblazer seed funding program - a key part of the national Trailblazer initiative led by Curtin University - and offered participants invaluable experience in communicating their research to industry. Sincere thanks to our panel - Justin Sully, Nicola S., Clytie Dangar and Ruth Knibbe, and to Leigh Staines for expertly chairing the session 👏 #Trailblazer #RTCM #CriticalMinerals #UQEAIT #ResearchImpact #UniversityTransformation #UQ #IndustryEngagement #Collaboration Rohan McDougall, Matthew Dargusch, Caroline Stott, Colin D.,Vedant Bhandari, Daniel Franks, Justin Sully, Nicola S. In celebration of #UQ Giving Day, we asked our incredible EAIT students and alumni to describe the moment STEM first sparked their curiosity, and to imagine what a program like the Mobile Makerspace might have meant to them growing up in regional and remote Australia. Thank you to our wonderful community who shared their stories, childhood photos and passion for helping future generations follow in their footsteps. This was a good reminder of why we do what we do, and just how important it is to create opportunities for young people, no matter where they live. We hope their stories will inspire you as much as they did us💜 Read their stories: https://lnkd.in/gKJAkzHg Donate to inspire more students through the Mobile Makerspace https://lnkd.in/g-wvHEXN The University of Queensland UQ Alumni UQ School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering UQ School of Civil Engineering UQ School of Architecture, Design and Planning UQ School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

In an inspiring partnership between UQ Design and Southern Cross Care Queensland, led by Dr Charlotte Kessler, in collaboration with Professor Nancy Pachana from UQ - School of Psychology, third-year Bachelor of Design students co-designed solutions alongside aged care residents and staff. From tackling social isolation to transforming underused outdoor spaces, students used co-design methods to create solutions grounded in empathy, agency, and impact, responding to critical issues raised by the 2021 Royal Commission into Aged Care. Standout projects included Flourish Together, a modular community garden designed for residents with limited mobility; Plates Like Home, a collection of personalised crockery that encourages connection and conversation at mealtimes; and GeoDome, a weatherproof outdoor structure that transforms neglected areas into vibrant social hubs This project highlights how emerging designers are building valuable experience and tackling complex social issues through human-centred design and collaborative innovation. What if cholesterol isn’t just a marker for heart health, but also a vehicle for life-saving medicines and even cancer signals?💡 PhD researcher Raluca Ghebosu, under the mentorship of Associate Professor Joy Wolfram, PhD at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology AIBN and the School of Chemical Engineering UQ have developed a breakthrough test that reveals how medicines and other molecules ‘hitchhike’ on cholesterol particles in the bloodstream. Raluca and Joy have created a tool that could reshape how we design and deliver medicines, and how we understand the way cancer spreads. The test, called lipoprotein association fluorometry (LAF), uses fluorescent signals to track interactions with cholesterol in real time. It’s fast, with results in an hour instead of a week, and low cost - opening the door to more accessible, efficient drug development 💫 But the implications may go further. The same test revealed that cancer cells may be hijacking cholesterol particles, potentially sending out signals that help them grow and spread. That insight could change how we approach cancer treatment. Published in The Journal of Extracellular Vesicles and now the subject of a patent application through UniQuest, this research was also supported by colleagues at UQ Frazer Institute and the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine (AITHM) at James Cook University. Recently, our ENVE2501 students took part in a field trip to Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island), where they explored the island’s unique ecosystems and environmental challenges through hands-on learning. The group visited several key locations including the Gorge Walk at Point Lookout, where they observed turtles, manta rays, dolphins, and whales. Led by Dr Tracey Read PhD from the ARC Training Centre for Bioplastics and Biocomposites, students took part in a clean-up activity collecting plastic debris washed ashore. The activity quickly drew the attention of other beachgoers who joined in. It became a powerful moment of shared action demonstrating how small, thoughtful efforts can inspire wider community engagement and meaningful change. The group also visited Brown Lake and the Moreton Bay Research Station, where students attended a presentation on the island’s ecosystems. The trip concluded with seagrass surveys on the sandflats, helping students understand the ecological importance of these habitats and the services they provide to the bay. We are grateful to Associate Professor Gilda Carvalho and Professor Steven Pratt for leading this enriching learning experience. #EnvironmentalEngineering #Fieldtrip
