𝗜𝗙𝗥𝗦 𝟵 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 Bangladesh Bank’s directive to implement ECL-based loan classification and provisioning as per IFRS 9 marks a structural change in how banks will measure and manage credit risk. For most institutions in Bangladesh, this shift represents the first full alignment with global financial reporting standards. Until now, banks have largely followed the Central Bank guided prudential guidelines rather than IAS 39 or IFRS 9, resulting in limited use of expected credit loss models and risk-based provisioning frameworks.   On 8 October 2025, KPMG in Bangladesh held a focused workshop at the BRAC Centre under the theme “IFRS 9 Implementation: Turning Regulatory Vision into Banking Practice.” The objective was to mark the dedicated IFRS 9 implementation team’s readiness for the transition by translating regulatory requirements into practical implementation steps. Drawing on KPMG’s experience in IFRS 9 projects across large multiple markets, the sessions explored key building blocks of implementation: data readiness, model development, governance structure, and system integration.   The discussion highlighted that the move to IFRS 9 is not only a compliance exercise but also is a shift toward a more forward-looking and analytical approach to credit risk management. Banks that treat such implementation as a strategic opportunity, rather than a reporting obligation, will be better positioned to strengthen balance sheet resilience and improve decision-making in credit, pricing, and capital allocation.   KPMG’s approach focuses on combining global experienced and tested methodologies with a local comprehensive understanding of regulatory expectations and market realities.
